UK TV programmes to watch this week : 09/03/2024

Texas Live in the Piano Room (BBC 2/HD | 8:35pm to 9:05pm | Saturday 9th March 2024)

The Glasgow band join the BBC Concert Orchestra for an extended TV special of their Radio 2 Piano Room, performing new orchestral versions of their hits. There are stripped back versions of classics such as Halo, sweeping takes of songs like Black Eyed Boy, special disco string arrangements on tracks like Mr Haze, plus an cover of Charles and Eddie’s Would I Lie to You? Vernon Kay presents.

Sharleen Spiteri takes a dive into the BBC’s music archive to select the Glasgow band’s greatest appearances on a selection of programmes and live events from across their 35-year career. It’s a collection featuring all of their biggest hits, from I Don’t Want a Lover and Black Eyed Boy to Summer Son and Say What You Want, combined with Sharleen’s memories of several of her own favourite moments, including last year’s triumphant return to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury, dressing up as Elvis and a key collaboration with hip-hop icons the Wu-Tang Clan.

Texas with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC 2/HD | 10:15pm to 11:15pm | Saturday 9th March 2024)

The band join forces with the 60-piece BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at Glasgow’s Barrowland in an event recorded for BBC Music Day in 2017. Vic Galloway introduces the collaboration, which includes performances of Black Eyed Boy, Summer Son and I Don’t Want a Lover.

As the team investigates the victim’s loved ones, they discover a family with numerous skeletons in their closets – whilst an ominous woman watches everything unfold from the shadows. Meanwhile, an old face returns to St Marie, but isn’t met with open arms. Guest starring Ronni Ancona and John Gordon Sinclair.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 12th March 2024) ** NEW SERIES **

In this special episode, Dermot O’Leary will uncover the untold story of the institution’s heroic efforts in the Second World War, to commemorate the 2024 bicentenary of the RNLI. With first hand testimony from descendants of wartime crew members and stories from local historians, Dermot learns how the RNLI’s volunteer crews were launched into the conflict.

The Canal Map of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 15th March 2024)

A look at Britain’s beloved canal network via a fact-filled cruise along the first superhighways of the Industrial Revolution. In the age before mechanisation, a frenzy of canal-building saw a new army of workers carve out the British landscape, digging out hundreds of miles of waterways using picks, shovels and muscle.

Great British Cities with Susan Calman (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 15th March 2024)

Newcastle. Series 1, episode 2. The comedian explores Newcastle, where resident historian Dave Silk reveals the sinister story of William Heron – a roguish sheriff who ruled over the people with an iron fist. She marvels in the Georgian splendour of the city centre with local guide Amanda Hepburn. And Susan meets up with author Terry Deary at St Andrew’s Parish Church, where he reveals the horrible history of a mass execution.

Catherine finds herself entangled in the case when an old friend becomes a murder suspect.

A scandalous discovery leads Tonya to taking drastic action and the school is plunged into darkness in a blackout. Preston takes the law into his own hands as Schuey continues to cause chaos. Neil and Coral butt heads and Libby goes to extreme lengths to keep her dad on her side. Kai is presented with an exciting idea for his future.

The Isle of Wight (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 22nd February 2024)

Summer is almost over, but in the seaside town of Sandown, there’s still plenty to look forward to as the town gears up for the Sandown Carnival. Keen to drum up new custom, café owner Vivette Fryer is planning a barbecue to give revellers a taste of her authentic Caribbean cooking. In Colwell Bay, former kite surfing champion Tom Court is making the most of the windy weather to brush up on his skills.

Into Alaska with Sue Perkins (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 23rd February 2024)

The presenter begins the last leg of her journey by facing up to her fear of flying – though before she even steps onto a plane, Sue has to survive a heart-racing air crash simulator. Then she takes off to see the mesmerising Kennicott Glacier, and parts of Alaska unreachable by road. Sue also visits the formerly abandoned ghost town of McCarthy.
