The Olympic diver takes on an epic endurance challenge as he rows, cycles, swims and runs his way from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford to his home town of Plymouth. The first day begins with a 5am start at the Aquatics Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where Tom won his first Olympic medal in 2012. Just nine weeks earlier Tom had never been in a rowing boat before, but his challenge begins with a demanding five mile row all the way to Tower Bridge in central London.

Meanwhile, no-nonsense consultant Ms Houghton takes Shruti under her wing, although her advice is not what she was hoping for.

Michael Portillo continues his South Wales coastal railway journey in Barry Island, where he joins a Bristol pilot on his way to help guide a feeder container ship into port. Skirting the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Michael alights at Llantwit Major to visit St Donat’s Castle, before reaching the pretty seaside resort of Porthcawl.

Ben spends time with a multi-generational family in Oxfordshire who have left their conventional life behind and relocated to an empty plot of land which they have transformed. Ben learns about the obstacles the family have overcome and how they have spent two decades honing their skills and living off the land.

Michael Portillo’s coastal rail journey along the south coast of Wales reaches the town of Port Talbot, where he investigates how the steel industry is planning to decarbonise. Across the Bay, Michael arrives in The Mumbles, site of the world’s first passenger railway in 1807, before making his way from Gowerton to Burry Port and heading for the wild and blustery Pembrey Sands.

There, Michael is on the trail of the quarter of a million honeybees that live in the garden.

Michael Portillo reaches the most westerly station in Wales, on the final leg of his rail journey along its southern coastline. At Milford Haven, Michael learns from the Harbour Master about the biggest energy port in the United Kingdom, which has an oil refinery and storage terminals as well as natural gas terminals. Further along the estuary at Pembroke Dock, Michael visits a pioneering project to harness the power of the sea.

The presenter visits the Peak District in the heart of England, famed for its striking landscapes and rolling hills. There Susan negotiates Segway tracks, rides a tram, braves the River Derwent, and scales the Heights of Abraham in a cable car.

Onboard the West Highland Line, Michael Portillo explores the stunning scenery of Scotland’s west coast and islands as he heads to the Hebridean archipelago from the ferry terminal of Oban. On his way to the Isle of Mull, Michael watches eagerly for sea mammals in a stretch of water where many species of whales, dolphins and porpoises have been recorded, before checking out the daily catch in the fishing port of Tobermory. Later, Michael heads to the tiny Isle of Staffa, where he follows in the wake of a young Felix Mendelssohn, who was only 20-year-old when he set eyes on the volcanic sea cavern, Fingal’s Cave.

Michael Portillo’s railway adventure reaches the west coast of Scotland where, aboard the Jacobite Express, he crosses the awe-inspiring Glenfinnan Viaduct. With his view of the curve of 21 arches built entirely of concrete, Michael and his fellow passengers are the envy of the crowds waving below. Spectacular engineering is in store for Michael in the Grampian mountains at Fort William, where he investigates the Lochaber Aluminium Works.

Michael reaches the terminus of the West Highland Line at Mallaig, from where he follows in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie, over the sea to Skye. The island is renowned for wildlife and Michael seeks out one of its most spectacular residents, the sea eagle. He is lucky enough also to spot a school of dolphins.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 18th February 2022)

The presenter enjoys scenic views from the stunning shores of Loch Lochy. Susan spies some activity ahead – which turns out to be a spot of axe throwing, and local chap Woodman Tom is happy to give her a go. Susan’s last stop is in Glen Coe, where she takes learns to paddle-board.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 18th February 2022)

A reggae rap artist is shot dead at a soundcheck for a concert. Things prove uncomfortable for Marlon when he discovers a personal connection to the crime. Caribbean-set detective drama, starring Ralf Little, Don Warrington and Tahj Miles.

Dr Turner attends a district health committee meeting on measles vaccination and hopes to increase uptake by running a pilot scheme in Poplar.

Michael Portillo sets off from Tynemouth on the first leg of a trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed, hearing about of a 19th-century tragedy at sea that inspired 140 local men to set up a coastal rescue service. At Long Sands beach, Michael rolls up his sleeves to help volunteers caring for sick and injured seals at the Tynemouth Aquarium Seal Hospital.

He manages to get out of work on time to attend his best friend’s stag do, but is immediately called back to the hospital to cover a staff shortage, abandoning his boyfriend Harry at the party.

AstraZeneca: A Vaccine for the World (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 8th February 2022)

BBC medical editor Fergus Walsh examines the inside story and extraordinary ambition behind the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. Having reported on the vaccine since its early development, Fergus examines the challenges this jab faced in Europe and beyond, and asks if it fulfilled the original hopes of the scientists in Oxford.

Iain Robertson Rambles (BBC Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 10th February 2022)

For the final third of his 131-mile Speyside Way trek, Iain Robertson is joined by musician Paul Anderson and actor Joanne Gallagher as they celebrate everything from the river’s whisky tradition, fairy walks, and even one of his favourite Scottish landmarks.

Susan takes her campervan to the rolling countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, a part of the world known as Herriot Country, named after fictional vet James Herriot. He was a creation of a real Yorkshire vet – and Susan’s first stop is at his former home in Thirsk. Susan later heads to Linton in Craven, where she has her first Women’s Institute meeting.

When a woman reports a murder and is then found strangled, the team is left wondering whether she was reporting her own murder.
