Beach Live: Jurassic Coast Revealed (BBC 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 17th July 2018)

Dan Snow and wildlife experts Lucy Cooke and Niall Strawson uncover historical, geological and wildlife treasures live from the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. From crabs and bats to owls and cormorants, this episode investigates how much wildlife is living on the beach. The strandline’s hidden world of sandhoppers and seaweed is magnified, while specialist underwater cameras give a view of sharks and crabs lying deep in the ocean. Dan Snow examines the royal origin of beach huts and sees how varied their use is in modern-day Britain. Lucy Cooke demonstrates how a humble mollusc helps to train racehorses in Devon. Niall Strawson is in charge of the Discovery Centre, where a panel of experts examine and assess the significance of beach finds from all over the country. And the creation of the unique geological make-up of the Jurassic Coast is seen through the medium of cake! Earth scientist Dr Anjana Khatwa talks Niall through the layers as seen from the sea.

There are over 300 shipwrecks in Lyme Bay alone, from old galleons to submarines. Dan dives to discover the story behind some of the more unusual vessels, a number of top secret WWII tanks that sank in a D-Day landings rehearsal known as Exercise Smash. Beach Live also has privileged access to a huge coastal quarry to find out why Portland stone has been used for historic buildings all over the world. Beyond the importance of the stone, the programme follows families of peregrines and little owls that live in these rock faces. How have they fared in this scorching summer?

In the final show live from Charmouth in Dorset, Dan Snow and the team go deep into the subject that has made this stretch of coastline world famous: its fossils. Lucy Cooke travels to London to understand how one plucky entrepreneurial woman, Mary Anning, rocked 19th-century Britain with her fossil finds. And the work of Mary continues to inspire scientists today as Lucy finds out when she travels to Oxford to help reconstruct a plesiosaur. Found only in Charmouth, the best-preserved dinosaur in the UK still has many mysteries. Niall Strawson joins Bristol scientists to help piece the jigsaw of an ichthyosaur together. Dan and Lucy Cooke carry out a live demonstration of burning rock and unpack the history of oil production at nearby Kimmeridge. The team are also on the trail of some living fossils. Dragonflies are prominent at this time of year on the coast in Dorset, but how have these majestic insects survived two mass extinctions?

Travelogue series following five UK celebs as they bundle into a caravan and explore the open road. Colin Baker, Sherrie Hewson, Tony Blackburn, Todd Carty and Sonia pack their bags for the Yorkshire Dales. They explore the landscape with a local shepherdess and sample traditional curd tarts, before going off grid at the quirky La Rosa campsite.

Market share eroded, until in 2016, mobile phone production in Finland ceased. The Rise and Fall of Nokia is a wry morality tale for our times, told by those that lived and worked through the rollercoaster years in a company that dominated a nation.

David explores the wilds of Central Asia to find what the Chinese wanted for their precious silk. In a remote gorge in Kazakhstan he finds clues carved in the rock.

Travelogue series following five UK celebs as they bundle into a caravan and explore the open road. Colin Baker, Sherrie Hewson, Tony Blackburn, Todd Carty and Sonia head to the Lake District, England’s largest national park. Making the most of the lakes, the gang take to the water in Coniston and step back in time on the world’s oldest passenger steamer, on Ullswater.

Great Rail Restorations with Peter Snow (Channel 4 | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 4th July 2018)

In the series finale to this unique restoration project, all four carriages are brought together to create a bespoke ‘Time Train’, representing 100 years of railway history. The Time Train will run on the beautiful Llangollen Railway. This means that first off three of the carriages have to make their own epic journeys to get there. Once in the Llangollen, the carriages are coupled up, and Peter – decked out in boiler suit and cap – drives the steam locomotive. Henry Cole joins chef Ben Mason in the kitchen, preparing a celebratory lunch for everyone to enjoy, seated in the luxurious surroundings of the Pullman dining car. At the end of a unique experience, Peter states: ‘Not only is my tummy a bit full after that excellent lunch but I must admit my old heart’s a bit stirred too. What our restorers have achieved is something truly extraordinary.’.

Comedy series in which lifelong friends cope with everything modern life has to throw at them. The future has arrived in Craiglang as Navid proudly shows off his new scanner. Much to his dismay, however, his shoppers are left struggling and frustrations quickly mount. Tam steps in to help an older woman scan her items and befriends her when it turns out he knows her daughter. But when Tam’s friends discover this older woman has no shortage of money, they become highly suspicious of his motives. Meanwhile, over at the butcher’s Jack and Victor are determined to get their hands on the last steak pie in the shop – but so is the rest of Craiglang.

To celebrate the centenary of the Royal Air Force, Ewan and Colin McGregor take to the skies in some of the world’s most iconic planes. These are the planes that were involved in aerial combat at every stage of the RAF’s story, from the biplanes used in the early days of dogfighting in World War One to the beautiful Spitfire of the Battle of Britain, the plucky Lysander and on to the mighty Vulcan nuclear bomber, as well as the Chinook helicopter and supersonic Typhoon that are still in service today. It is a story of amazing machines and epic battles, but above all it is the story of the men and women whose courage and ingenuity have been at the heart of the RAF for 100 years. On their journey Ewan and Colin meet people from throughout the RAF’s history.

Extreme Winter Road Rescue (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Monday 26th March 2018)

Documentary series following the emergency services who come to our aid when winter weather causes chaos. In the week that Storm Emma hits, the UK’s road network is brought to its knees. The heavy road team get to work to help a food delivery truck which is stuck in the snow to a local shop which has run out of food.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 26th March 2018)

Behind-the-scenes documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. When the Beast from the East and storm Emma collide, Paddington’s managers debate whether to close the station completely, something that has happened on very few occassions since World War II. There is excitement among the staff as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle board a train to Cardiff, but a rail defect at Didcot threatens to upset their journey.

Alan Titchmarsh reveals the history, human stories and the hidden treasures of Britain’s historical estates. Alan explores Cragside, a unique estate in Northumberland masterminded and landscaped by the Victorian inventor and pioneering industrialist Lord William Armstrong and filled with the most advanced technical advances of his day. Peter Purves visits Castle Drogo on Dartmoor, Miriam O’Reilly walks through the vast Cragside woodland and Angela Rippon visits the Red House in Bexleyheath, home of William Morris.

Documentary in which actor David Hayman presents a personal view of the battle for access to Scotland’s countryside, revealing how this conflict has shaped the physical and cultural landscape of the country. He meets landowners, gamekeepers and hill walkers to discover how ordinary Scots have come to claim their right to roam over their country’s mountains and glens, starting with Victorian rebels who dared to march across private grouse moors and progressing on to the 1930s, when thousands of urban Scots streamed out of the cities and into the hills. Finally, he discovers the present-day controversies that may threaten Scotland’s internationally renowned and hard-fought right to roam laws.

Boabby is persuaded to have a lock-in at The Clansman to mark the passing of Craiglang’s much-respected undertaker, so the regulars enjoy outdoing each other with stories of the most famous person they have ever met, dead or alive. After news spreads that a creepy new undertaker, Sheathing, has moved into Craiglang, nobody quite knows what to make of him. Isa, who has heard the stories, spreads the fear amongst the residents that he’s the grim reaper. Jack decides to figure out who this mysterious new undertaker really is. But when Isa turns up at Victor’s door in a complete panic and Sheathing appears unannounced, Jack and Victor have no option but to take matters into their own hands.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 16th March 2018)

Documentary series going behind the scenes of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on its 50th anniversary. The busy summer season is looming and the steam engines are old, so there’s always something to fix. The only chance of getting through the summer is if they complete the overhaul of Repton, a 1934 Schools class engine.

These championships see British stars Jason and Laura Kenny return to elite competition. Four-time Olympic champion Laura is back in action just six months after giving birth to the couple’s first child, while Jason – a six-time Olympic gold medallist – has reversed a private decision to retire after the Rio Games in 2016. Commentary is by Simon Brotherton and Chris Boardman.

Canadian Pacific freight crews tackle one of their most challenging loads. The team attempt to haul a 210-tonne reactor on an epic cross country journey.

Alan visits Stowe in Buckinghamshire, the most magnificent landscape garden of late 18th-century Britain and the site of a well-known public school. Pete Waterman discovers the link between Stowe and the Beatles, Dan Jones abseils down Lord Cobham’s Pillar at Stowe and Suzannah Lipscomb visits a Norfolk stone masonry to help re-create some of Stowe’s iconic statues.

Wildlife series revealing the hidden lives of both the familiar and more unusual animals with which we share our island home. Only the hardiest of beasts survive in Britain’s mountains and uplands, including the golden eagle and its prey the mountain hare, plus 400,000 red deer, the flamboyant black grouse, and sheep who have grazed for centuries.

Comedy series in which lifelong friends cope with everything modern life has to throw at them. Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid return for the 24th series of Top Gear. This week features the astonishing, ultra-exclusive Ferrari FXXK, tested to the max by Chris Harris at the Daytona circuit in Florida. Matt, Chris and Rory then race across Kazakhstan in three high-mileage cars: a Mercedes saloon, a Volvo estate and a London taxi, all of which have done at least 480,000 miles, the equivalent distance of going to the moon and back. Actor James McAvoy guest stars in the studio and on the famous Top Gear test track.

Rivers with Jeremy Paxman (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 5th March 2017)

Devoted fisherman Jeremy Paxman travels along four of the great rivers of Britain, meeting the people who make them what they are, unearthing the rivers’ history and traditions and exploring their wildlife. This time he’s on the Severn, the longest river in Britain, flowing through the heartlands of both England and Wales. He meets the last mud-horse fisherman on the Severn Sea, investigates the country’s largest ship graveyard, stops off for a glass or two of organic Worcestershire wine and, after demonstrating quite extraordinary levels of ineptitude at a coracle regatta, is greeted by a poet at the Severn’s source in the watershed of Wales.

Meet the Lords (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 6th March 2017)

Series following the larger-than-life characters that populate the House of Lords, one of Britain’s oldest, most idiosyncratic and most important institutions. Episode two of the exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary returns to the House as the government threatens to trim the Lords’ powers if they rebel again, but will they comply? Rebellious peer Lord Dubs is on a crusade to push through an amendment to the Immigration Bill to allow unaccompanied refugee children into the country, and Admiral Lord West isn’t happy about a public poll that has voted overwhelmingly to name a new polar research ship Boaty McBoatface.

Inside King’s Cross: The Railway (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm t0 10:05pm | Monday 6th March 2017)

Documentary series exploring King’s Cross station and the East Coast mainline. A train loses power, causing delays all the way from the North east to the capital. The team at the Rail Operating Centre must work the problem to get the vital network running again.

Celebrities go for a stroll through the great British outdoors with their faithful hound. Along the way they explore the history, wildlife and culture of the area. To the start the series, actor Robert Lindsay walks his two labradors on the Cornish coast. As a child Robert spent many happy days on Porthcurno beach. Now he’s back, walking a stretch of the South West Coast Path with its stunning views. Phil Spencer visits the historic Kent marshes and a brewery with his cocker spaniels. And actress Angela Griffin returns to her Yorkshire roots with her cavapoo, where she tries her hand as a shepherd.

The Last Leg (Channel 4/HD | 10:00pm to 11:05pm | Friday 10th March 2017)

The award-winning satirical comedy continues. Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe examine the biggest, most entertaining news stories and make use of the #isitok twitter handle, where viewers tweet in edgy current affairs questions that other shows might duck. In this edition, the boys are joined live in the studio by comedian Harry Hill and physicist Professor Brian Cox.

Series following the larger-than-life characters that populate the House of Lords, one of Britain’s oldest, most idiosyncratic and most important institutions. In a TV first, Meet the Lords has exclusive access to film behind the scenes in a turbulent year which has seen dramatic changes in the political landscape and the Lords battling it out with the government. This episode features new people’s peers, hereditaries and political grandees as they try to change legislation, follow their personal passions and clash with the government, all in a gothic palace where centuries-old ceremony and tradition dominate. This is the first time free-roaming cameras have ever been allowed to film in the Lords Chamber and in its committees.

Oz Clarke uncovers some Civil War history at Dunster Castle in Somerset. Jon Culshaw visits a stately pile in an unusual location, Dan Jones joins an architectural dig on the south coast, and Clive Aslet visits the spectacular grounds of Biddulph Grange in Staffordshire.

The award-winning satirical comedy continues. Documentary series. In Essex, RAC patrolman Simon fights through a blizzard to get to a lone woman who has broken down on a busy A-road at night, while in Lowestoft coastguards have their work cut out to keep the public safe as a red alert is issued for a huge tidal surge.

The Railways That Built Britain, with Chris Tarrant (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 20th February 2017)

Documentary series. Chris Tarrant explores how the advent of the railways transformed the nation. The railways played a crucial role during the two world wars. The factories were converted to produce munitions, the lines kept vital supply lines open, carried troops to and from the front line, and its underground stations became bomb shelters. There were heroes, but also victims as the railways became an enemy target.

Tales From the Coast with Robson Green (itv/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 21st February 2017)

Robson Green travels along some of the nation’s fascinating stretches of coastline. In the last episode, Robson visits Essex and Suffolk for a journey along one of the most varied coastal landscapes in Britain. His journey begins in the famous salt marshes of the Blackwater estuary, where he finds himself knee deep in sludge as he attempts to run the route of the Maldon mud race. At Clacton-on-Sea, Robson recalls the teenage hysteria of the early sixties, as he reunites a group of Mods and Rockers who hit the headlines when they clashed on the beach there in 1964. In Suffolk, Robson visits a giant shingle spit called Orford Ness, once a top secret military base that played a vital role in defending Britain from attack in both World Wars and was a testing site for atomic bombs. His final destination is the resort of Southwold, where he meets the owners of some of Britain’s most sought-after beach huts and hears the stories behind the highly-personal plaques which adorn its pier.

Dan Jones visits a remote farm in north Wales, which was rescued by a group of Hollywood A-listers.

South Downs: England’s Mountains Green (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 21st February 2017)

Peter Owen-Jones takes us into heart of the UK’s newest national park – the South Downs. Following the South Downs Way along the spine of the park, from the famous Seven Sisters Cliffs to Winchester – the ancient capital of England – Peter experiences an extraordinary year exploring the park’s stunning landscapes, rich history, wildlife and people. What emerges is a portrait of one of Britain’s most iconic landscapes, described by William Blake as ‘England’s mountains green’.
