Britain’s Most Historic Towns (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 14th November 2020)

Alice Roberts explores London’s Restoration history, including the founding of the Royal Society and the violent dark side behind Charles II’s carefully crafted public image. She visits St Paul’s Cathedral, reveals how women performed on stage for the first time during this period, and uncovers shocking details of the slave trade at the National Maritime Museum. Plus, a look at parallels between the plague that struck London during the 1660s and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 15th November 2020)

Sheila Hancock and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth tackle their first manual lock and some terrifyingly tight turns, but find themselves relaxing into life at 4mph, and marvel at how secret histories reveal themselves. They visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills, which built its own canal system to transport volatile ammunition – vital to Britain’s success in both world wars.

Cornwall with Simon Reeve (BBC 2/HD | 8:10pm to 9:10pm | Sunday 15th November 2020)

In the conclusion of his two-part journey, Simon Reeve investigates the environmental challenges facing Cornwall and the rest of the country. He discovers how the region’s farmers are adopting new, less intensive approaches that are both more profitable and environmentally friendly, and reveals how reintroducing beavers to the uplands could tackle the problem of widespread flooding. He also encounters some of the county’s iconic wildlife, including grey seals that live in constant risk of getting caught up in discarded fishing nets.

A major track circuit failure results in the closure of one of the busiest platforms and the technicians trying to fix the problem race against time to complete the job before rush hour begins. Staff and passengers are excited about the arrival of a West Country heritage steam train, while reports come into Route Control at Swindon of a very serious incident of suspected track sabotage.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 19th November 2020)

Nick Knowles meets Scunthorpe woman Caroline Blanchard, a single mum who has twice had to make the decision to turn off the life support for people she loves. She and her children live in the shadow of the garage, where seven-year-old Natasha banged her head in 2007, and the conservatory, where husband and father Paul had a heart attack four years later. The volunteers plan is to give them a new home for a new start, including demolishing the conservatory and garage where these two tragedies occurred.

Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 19th November 2020)

Tom visits the Black Bull in the village of Gartmore in Stirling. Struggling to survive, it was put on the market and 250 locals clubbed together to buy it. Now the pub is staffed entirely by volunteers and the management are planning to renovate the bedrooms to attract tourists. But Tom has his concerns. He also catches up with the staff of the pubs he is helping in Cornwall, south London and Stroud – but just when all the hard work seems to be paying off, the pandemic strikes. Now every pub in Britain faces a fight for survival.

The isles of Lewis and Harris form Britain’s largest offshore island, with a rich history dating back thousands of years. Susan seeks out the home of the world-famous Harris Tweed, visiting a local weaver where she tries her hand at making some of the fabric. Then in Habost, she learns how to Step Dance – a centuries old practice that was almost lost from Scotland for ever. At Callanish, Susan visits some awe-inspiring Neolithic giants – 49 standing stones, predating Stonehenge and steeped in mystery. Nearby, she learns the secret to jewellery making that captures the texture of these ancient standing stones.

Professor Alice Roberts explores the medieval history of Lincoln, visiting the cathedral that was once the tallest building in the world and re-living the battle at Lincoln Castle. She discovers how moving up the social ladder in medieval times required a whole new wardrobe of clothing and accessories and gets top grips with a historically accurate crossbow. Aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson uses the latest drone technology to look at the geographical features that shaped the city’s development.

Cornwall with Simon Reeve (BBC 1/HD | 8:10pm to 9:10pm | Saturday 7th November)

The first of two programmes in which Simon Reeve travels through Cornwall as the county emerges from lockdown, discovering the impact of Covid-19 on a part of the country highly reliant on tourism. Simon discovers the ongoing impact of the collapse of the tin-mining industry in the 1980s when he visits one of Britain’s poorest estates, and meets the entrepreneurs who sell homemade food on the beach who are struggling to make enough money to last the winter.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 9th November 2020)

A passenger drops her overnight bag on the tracks and threatens to jump down to retrieve it, while a major power cut at Maidenhead has caused signalling to fail on all the tracks, including the main line into Paddington. At Great Western Railway’s Long Rock Depot, the famed Night Riviera sleeper service departs once more after a three-month suspension due to the pandemic, but with radical changes.

The River Thames: Then & Now (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:05pm | Monday 9th November 2020)

A look at the development of the London railway terminus from its opening in 1852 to the present, as it has been transformed it into one of the best connected places in Britain. In Victorian Britain, King’s Cross became a thriving industrial hub, bringing in goods to feed and power London, while 20 industrial buildings that once its beating heart have been given a new lease of life and is now a tech hub that is home to Google, Facebook and Youtube.

Holby City (BBC 1/HD | 8:15pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 10th November 2020)

Ric wakes up from his coma to find the world in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic – and that the ongoing crisis threatens his chance of surviving his recent brain surgery. Sacha’s colleagues are concerned by how he is taking Essie’s death, but he turns his back on them in favour of a stranger, while Cameron struggles to prove that he can be a hero.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 10th November 2020)

The crew of a Weston-super-Mare lifeboat race to the aid of three casualties who have been caught by a rising tide and are exhausted from trying to swim against the current. On the northeast coast of England, volunteers come to the aid of a father and son trapped against a cliff face, while in Swanage, two lifeboats are launched to attend to a grounded yacht and a badly injured sailor.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 12th November 2020)

Nick Knowles and the team descend on Caswell Bay, Swansea, to transform a dilapidated, out-of-use bus shelter into the first, fully adapted surf centre Surfability UK, a charity that provides surfing lessons and experiences for people with disabilities and learning difficulties, and which receives funding from Children in Need. Throughout, Nick presents stories of how children and young people have benefitted from the support of the charity, but the challenge remains tough as this is the team’s first build during Covid-19.

Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge (BBC 2/HD| 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 12th November 2020)

For the past 20 years, pubs have been closing down at an alarming rate. Concerned by a crisis in the industry he loves, Tom Kerridge sets out on a mission to revive struggling pubs. He begins at the White Hart in Chilsworthy, Cornwall, where a 300-year-old freehouse, the only pub in the village, is in danger of closing.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 13th November 2020)

The comedian ventures off the mainland to the Isle of Bute for a privileged look at what is said to be Scotland’s first million-pound home – Mount Stuart House. In Argyll, Susan visits Kilmartin Glen, an ancient valley and home to the Scotti people who gave Scotland its name. She visits a Bronze Age tomb and learns how to make a copper axe in the way they were made thousands of years ago. Then, on the shores of Loch Fyne, she discovers the secrets of oyster cultivation before looking for beavers in the beautiful Knapdale Forest.

It’s not just fallen trees the team needs to be worried about – a large industrial unit has been blown right across the tracks and emergency services are on their way.

Ade Adepitan takes viewers on a funny, poignant and revealing tour across four decades of Children in Need.

The comedian ventures to the islands of Mull and Staffa, nestled along the west coast of Scotland and home to some of the most breathtaking sights the country has to offer. Beginning her trip in Staffa, Susan visits the cathedral-like cavern of Fingal’s Cave, one of the UK’s true natural wonders formed over thousands of years. Her need for speed is fulfilled when she witnesses the Mull Rally, while in Tobermory, she visits a biscuit factory run on sustainable energy. Lastly, the presenter goes in search of the largest bird of prey in the UK – the white-tailed sea eagle.

A look at the campaign to bring the slave trade to an end after 400 years. Divers explore the sunken remains of a ship that had been carrying freed slaves who had been recaptured. Having traced his own ancestry back to the Benga people of Gabon, Samuel visits the country to learn more of their traditions and stories. Plus, a trip to Costa Rica in search of evidence of escapees from two Danish slave ships.

The return of the documentary going behind the scenes at the London station. The comedian explores the area between Glasgow and Edinburgh, paying a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens and setting to work as an assistant keeper at Edinburgh Zoo. A look at those who resisted slavery, including the famous Underground Railroad and freedom boats that helped runaway slaves to escape to the safety of Canada, using a network of safe houses to make the perilous journey north. The programme also examines the influence of famous freedom fighter Harriet Tubman and the black soldiers who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

The Fraserburgh crew race to save a stricken fishing boat without a working rudder in a force-eight gale. On Loch Ness, a yacht becomes trapped on a weir, and one wrong move by the lifeboat crew could send it over the edge. On the north Devon coast, the Minehead crew comes to the aid of a puppy that has swallowed a fishing hook.

The comedian explores Aberdeenshire and Angus on Scotland’s north-east coast – a vast area of cliffs, beaches, rolling hills and fertile farmland. Susan begins with a visit to Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, where she learns about the castle’s role in the Second World War, tells the time on Scotland’s largest sundial and is let loose with the pruning shears on a very special grape vine. In Essex, the crew at Walton and Frinton gets an unusual mayday call to a ship called HMS Pickle. Arriving on scene, they discover it is not the modern naval vessel they expected, but a replica of a ship that once served in Nelson’s fleet, and though the original survived the battle of Trafalgar, this one is shipping water and sinking fast. On the east coast of Scotland, the crew at Anstruther faces a tricky rescue trying to extract a walker with a badly broken leg from a remote coastal path. And in the Shannon basin in Ireland, the volunteers at one of the RNLI’s few inland stations at Lough Derg are woken in the early hours of the morning by their pagers – cries for help have been heard coming from the 40-mile-long lake. After launching into inky darkness and thick fog, the crew make an eerie discovery.

Laurence asks Kris to fight in a charity boxing match to raise cash for a homeless shelter. Can he make the leap from mild-mannered hotel manager to prizefighter? The comedian explores Grampian and the Central Highlands, going behind the region’s most iconic sights to see what the tourists miss – and unearth the hidden gems in her home country. In the Irish resort of Skerries, the crew run to the station when strong winds sweep a teenager on a paddleboard towards the busy shipping lanes of the Irish Sea, while in the Bristol Channel, among the many yachts taking advantage of a fresh summer breeze, one loses a crew member overboard. While the crowds are heading home at the end of a busy summer’s day in Cleethorpes, two 13-year-old girls find themselves alone, cut off and at risk of drowning on a sandbank rapidly disappearing under a fast-rising tide.

James’ workload doubles when Siegfried takes ill during a harsh winter. Among his many patients is Dick Rudd’s prized cow, which has an abscess in its throat and is on the brink of choking to death. Dick is devastated, having risked everything on the animal, leaving James determined to save the animal by any means. Mrs Hall discovers it is James’ birthday, and Tristan tries his best to cheer him up by arranging a double date.

A busy Friday sees almost 700 party-mad people checking in. But with just minutes to go, there are problems with the plumbing. It’s even worse for Charley, who has arrived for a hen party organised by her brother, as there are problems with their room – and general manager Damian struggles to placate them. Meanwhile, owners Laurence and Katie throw an extravagant circus-themed party for the twins’ fourth birthday – and all the staff are invited.

Reports on adventure sports, proving that the pandemic hasn’t stopped Scotland’s most determined outdoor enthusiasts from creating their own entertainment. Ultra-runner Donnie Campbell creates a new record time for running all 282 Munros, 13-year-old, Isla Easto comes out of her comfort zone to cycle 400kms coast to coast, while top adventure racer Marie Meldrum shares her lockdown diary.

The comedian explores the Borders region, heading to a secret woodland in Galloway Forest, where she meets some cute and ardently protected red squirrels. She then enjoys a tour of Traquair House which, at 1,000 years old, has played host to historic figures such as Bonnie Prince Charlie. Susan is in her element as the 21st Lady of Traquair reveals secret stairwells and Mary Queen of Scots’ bed. To the south, in Eastriggs, Susan visits the site of the world’s largest munitions factory, where thousands of female workers produced explosives during the First World War.

James is appointed as attending vet at the Darrowby Show – but Siegfried and Tristan warn him that the job is a poisoned chalice and expect him to quit after the first day. Mrs Hall has more faith in him, however, and makes a wager with the Farnon brothers. James finds himself surrounded by pushy farmers offering bribes to help them cheat their way to victory and faces a dilemma when the Aldersons desperately need his help in securing the sale of their prize bull.

Checking into the Shankly this week is a party of 41 stags, who are being looked after by trainee guest relations manager James. But the morning before the lads arrive, he is nowhere to be found. Owner Lawrence challenges staff to set up a glamping festival on the roof in just one week, a loved-up couple need a last-minute bridal suite and a bride-to-be brings her friends to the hotel for her second hen party this year.

The comedian explores the Kingdom of Fife and the East, starting at Falkland Palace – a former retreat of Scottish royalty. Once a hunting lodge to eight Stuart monarchs, it is the final resting place of King James V. Susan also visits Wemyss Caves, home to the largest collection of Pictish carvings in the world, and is invited into a little-known cave whose location must remain secret. Later, she is surprised to find a Japanese garden hidden deep in the countryside and gets the chance to bat for the world’s only beach cricket club on Elie beach.

George Clarke’s National Trust Unlocked (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Sunday 20th September 2020)

In Devon, George visits one of the National Trust’s quirkiest buildings, a bear hut on the 6400-acre Killerton estate. The main house was given away because of the socialist ideals of the aristocratic family who lived there. George unearths secrets and scandal at Baddesley Clinton Hall, a fortified Tudor manor house in Warwickshire where in the past the architecture has meant the difference between life and death, then heads home to the north-east for a walk through Gibside Estate, a landscape park with royal connections and crowned with jaw-dropping architecture.

Mrs Pumphrey is convinced her beloved Pekingese is dying. James discovers that she has not been keeping her pampered pet on the strict diet he prescribed, and is forced to take the dog in while it recovers from illness brought about by over indulgence. Tristan prepares to return to university, but needs Siegfried’s help to pay for his accommodation. However, his older brother is not prepared to part with a penny until he has proved he is serious about being a vet. James treats the Aldersons’ prize bull, and Helen rewards his efforts with some unusual home baking.

The Grand Party Hotel (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 24th September 2020)

Behind the doors of the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, which has themed party suites so guests can celebrate important moments in their lives. But with the hotel’s online rating having slipped, a new general manager has been called in to shake things up, although his changes do not go down well with the staff. Elsewhere, wedding planner Ciara helps brides-to-be Trudie and Danielle, while guest relations officer Liam looks after Laura, who has checked in to celebrate her recent divorce.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 24th September 2020)

On the Wirral coast, the crew of Hoylake’s rescue hovercraft is called out to an unconventional casualty – a porpoise stranded by the outgoing tide. Two hundred miles to the north another unusual victim of the British tides, a teenage wedding guest in suit and tie, is plucked off a fast-disappearing rocky outcrop in the middle of the sea by the Kinghorn crew, while in Cornwall, the Penlee lifeboat crew receives a dreaded call – a fishing boat, skippered by a fisherman the crew all know, is in flames miles out at sea.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 25th September 2020)

The presenter explores the beautiful Trossachs and west of Scotland, a place filled with dramatic scenery and abundant with iconic glens, impressive castles and rare wildlife. Susan begins at the fairy-tale Castle of Inveraray, where she goes behind the scenes with His Grace, the Duke of Argyll, head of Clan Campbell, to reveal some amazing secrets that may not be for the faint hearted. At the picture-perfect Loch Katrine, the comedian gets exclusive access at a world-class feat of Scottish engineering and in Inverawe, discovers the secrets to Scotland’s world-famous smoked salmon.

George visits the magnificent and meticulously crafted country retreat of Standen in West Sussex – one of the best examples of the Arts and Crafts design movement to be found anywhere in the world. He discovers a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture at Tyntesfield in Somerset, with its acres of flower-filled terraces, and unleashes a medieval catapult at Corfe Castle in Dorset, an iconic ruin who’s first stone was laid almost a millennium ago, before risking vertigo with his trusty companion Loki at the highest point on England’s south coast – the famous Golden Cap.

Siegfried applies to become attending vet at Darrowby racecourse – but the position comes with conditions, and he is torn between his ambition and his loyalty to the practice. Tristan collects the debts owed to the surgery, but ends up losing all the money and resorts to placing a risky bet to cover up his mistake. When the favourite to win on the race day is diagnosed with a inoperable condition, James has his first painful experience of having to put an animal down – only to end up being threatened with legal action by the owner.

At Swanage lifeboat station, brothers Matt and Gavin, following in their father’s footsteps, race to rescue a pair of novice paddleboarders before they are swept out into the busy shipping lanes. On the north east coast, the Withernsea crew scours the North Sea for a local fisherman and friend who is missing at sea, while in Blackpool, a volunteer’s wedding day is interrupted by an urgent call for help.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 18th September 2020)

The comedian’s latest Scottish tour covers Falkirk and the Lothians. She takes a canal boat trip that includes a look behind the scenes at the world’s only rotating boat lift. Venturing into Midlothian, she visits a royal hideaway with a dramatic history and tries her hand at falconry. She also visits the site of the world stone-stacking championship and learns the secrets of a small island with links to smuggling that is believed to have inspired Treasure Island.
