Documentary series going behind the scenes at Paddington, and the Western Network. A driver raises the alarm when he suspects that his train has hit something, or someone, on the line. Heavy rain brings down a tree which closes the tracks between Banbury and Oxford, and engineers begin the process of dismantling a Victorian viaduct.

Documentary series following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). As the summer sun comes out, so do the fun seekers, and crews around the country get ready for action. In Southend, a family of five out sightseeing are a mile off shore and waist-deep in water after being caught out by the tide. The Shoreham crew are paged in the early hours after a drunken festival-goer jumps in the river. And the Brighton crew fear the worst when a man tombstones off the pier at low tide.

When an early morning dog walker spots a flare off shore, the Rhyl crew race to one of the most mysterious shouts they have seen. The Lowestoft crew find themselves paged to help to a sailor who doesn’t want to be rescued. And at Tower, a good samaritan is clinging on for his life after trying to rescue a dog which has jumped into the Thames.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 18th October 2017)

Ecologist Fred and communications manager Saffron Baker live in a beautiful village in the highly protected Peak District. After 15 years of saving and planning, they’re finally able to start building their large, new family home on a steep slope on the edge of the village. Desperate not to annoy the neighbours, their innovative design features just one storey visible from the main road, but two more storeys buried out of sight lower down the slope. The start of construction proves more a feat of civil engineering than a house build, with the difficulty of excavating into solid limestone, compounded by an incredibly steep and muddy access road for the heavy machinery. Then when their self-build mortgage falls through, work stops for months. It’s a major test of Saffron and Fred’s commitment and resolve, when all they have to show for years of effort is a huge hole in the ground.

The Country Council (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPl;ayer only | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 19th October 2017)

Documentary series following the work of Argyll and Bute council, charting the unique challenges faced by staff working hundreds of miles from the nearest city to provide services in difficult times. In this first episode, cameras follow Desmond Middleton, one of only two council debt counsellors covering the entire region of Argyll and Bute at a time when one in six people are struggling with debt. Plus the how housing officers in Rothesay tackle issues of isolation across Bute, and a rare insight into the council-run airport in Oban, which provides a lifeline to the islands and communities it serves.

Britain by Bike with Larry and George Lamb (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 20th October 2017)

Travelogue series with father-and-son duo Larry and George Lamb, exploring Britain’s national parks from the saddle. They cycle through the New Forest National Park where they encounter the famous ponies, set up a bushcraft camp, attend a chair building class, and canoe down the Beaulieu River.

The award-winning series is back live on Friday nights for a 12th series with its unique brand of irreverent satire and sharp topical comedy. When an adventurous seal is discovered on the steps of a block of flats, Redcar’s newest recruit is first on the scene. And in Minehead, a challenging rescue forces an inexperienced crew member to consider her future.

Robson Green’s Coastal Lives (itv/HD | 8:00pm to 8:30pm | Tuesday 10th October 2017)

Robson Green explores the extraordinary lives and homes of the people who live on Britain’s coastline – from families who are swapping their city homes for a new life by the sea to those who have lived on the coast for generations. His coastal journey reaches the east coast as Robson finds out more about the community spirit that makes life by the sea so fulfilling. He meets a couple living on a seal sanctuary, a volunteer lighthouse keeper who lives four days a month at the remote coastal location of Spurn Point, and meets the people who live on a former World War I campsite that now houses chalets with listed status.

This is one of the most ambitious homes ever seen on Grand Designs – a scaly, curving house that’s reminiscent of a giant coiled snake. Stephen Tetlow is head of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Stephen’s wife Elizabeth is a committed horticulturalist. Together they want to build a home that reflects their passions – one that pushes Stephen’s engineering skills to the limit and embraces Elizabeth’s deep affinity with nature. Taking inspiration from an ammonite shell found on their land in the beautiful Blackdown Hills in Devon, the house spirals onto the landscape over two levels and mixes natural materials with cutting edge technology. Construction of such a complex curving structure proves a huge challenge and progress is tortuously slow.

Travelogue series with father-and-son duo Larry and George Lamb, exploring Britain’s national parks from the saddle. They head for the beach on the spectacular Pembrokeshire coast. Larry takes a tour of an Iron Age fort and George attempts part of the Tour of Pembrokeshire.

The Minehead crew must scour the cliffs and shoreline after a young woman goes missing in a distressed state. And when they’re paged to a man seen entering the Thames, the Tower crew face the possibility they may not find him in time.

Robson Green explores the extraordinary lives and homes of the people who live on Britain’s coastline – from families who are swapping their city homes for a new life by the sea to those who have lived on the coast for generations. This time he is in Pembrokeshire, meeting a family who have bought their very own island – complete with Napoleonic fort. Robson also goes fishing with a lobsterman who could not bear to be away from the coast where he grew up, and makes a splash with the ‘Bluetits’, Pembrokeshire’s wetsuit-free swimming club who love a swim in the chilly Celtic sea.

For most of us, rust and ruin are not interior design choices. But Beth Dadswell and Andrew Wilbourne can’t resist a bit of decay. As designers, they are passionate about preserving the marks of time. They’ve rescued a crumbling Victorian dairy in south east London, and plan to convert it into a family home while retaining as much of the ramshackle roof and crumbling brickwork as possible. All this in just six months and on a tight budget of £260k. As they begin stripping back the old dairy, the poor condition of the building becomes plain. It’s full of rusting metal and rotting wood. Beth and Andrew have to make some painful decisions about just how much decay they can live with. As time goes on, their vision of a ‘shabby chic’ finish, including a Parisian courtyard, is under threat from the pressure to make their new home fit for modern life.

We are a nation that loves our sheds – but not many of us would want to actually live in one. In Northern Ireland, young architect and shed fanatic Micah Jones has the chance to re-invent a dilapidated old agricultural building in the rolling countryside of County Down. Micah plans an upside down four bedroom shed using new techniques and materials. Micah and family move into a caravan on their windswept site for the duration of the build. But their limited £200k budget runs short and Micah is forced to do more and more of the work himself. And then news of a new baby on the way adds yet more pressure.

Penny Talelli has a passion for cutting-edge contemporary architecture, while husband Mark Edwards loves period buildings. Somehow, these two neurologists want to build a family home that satisfies both their tastes. But will it be the best of both worlds or just an appalling mishmash? Taking the plunge, they buy a derelict Victorian gatehouse on a very steep hill in north London, that currently sits abandoned and unloved. The plan is to restore it, paint it white, and then add a giant black zinc-clad box at the back, marrying their love of old and new. But they run into problems. The gatehouse needs knocking down. Excavating the sloping site takes longer than expected. Increasingly struggling to balance their busy working lives with project managing the build, the future of Penny and Mark’s unconventional home hangs in the balance.

Lego Masters (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 14th September 2017)

It’s the last stage of the contest. Which team will be crowned Lego Masters 2017? First, the remaining teams face their toughest quick-fire build of the competition and their toughest critics – children. The teams then have just three hours to bring the children’s inventive stories to life as brick displays – including a robot with an ostrich head, an alien from the planet Zorg, and a monster who devours a chocolate lake. Next, for the Grand Final, the remaining two teams have two weeks and half a million bricks to make their masterpiece. One team makes a human sculpture while the other createa a mythical world. Both builds are revealed to the public at London’s Design Museum; where they are judged by The LEGO Group’s Matthew Ashton and celebrity guest judge comedian Dara Ó Briain.

Drama showing the impact Princess Diana’s tragic death has on four ordinary people. Jack is the only child of an adored mother who dies the same night as Princess Diana. He struggles to come to terms with her death while computing the loss of an icon who meant so much to both of them. Yasmin is unhappily married to Hassan, an unsuccessful businessman who can’t admit his failure. Inspired by the public outpouring of emotion at Diana’s death, Yasmin goes on a journey of self-discovery. Michael is a junior reporter on his honeymoon in Paris with his new wife Sophie when news of Diana’s death breaks. Spending more and more time on the story at the expense of his honeymoon, Michael struggles to balance his career with his fledgling marriage. Mary is a Glaswegian florist, struggling for money. Mary hatches a plan to drive to London and sell flowers before Saturday’s funeral.

In Bangor, Northern Ireland, crew are tasked to find two teenage paddleboarders blown offshore towards nearby shipping lanes. When the Tenby crew learn a dog has fallen over steep cliffs, there is a race to reach him before concerned members of the public attempt to rescue him themselves. And on the north Norfolk coast, the harrowing hovercraft rescue of three young sisters still brings back painful memories for the Hunstanton crew.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 6th September 2017)

Few people would be brave or foolish enough to buy a building plot without visiting it first. But that’s exactly what ex-RAF pilot Jon and GP Gill Flewers did. Returning to the UK after a four year stint in New Zealand, this intrepid pair want to build a Kiwi-style hill house on the slopes of the Malvern hills in Worcestershire. Their ambitious three storey upside-down home will be clad in wood and stone, clinging to the hill and designed to take advantage of and enhance the surrounding scenery. But there are problems. The site is so steep that builders don’t want the job. So, despite a complete lack of experience, Jon quits his job to run the project himself. It proves an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Lego Masters (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 7th September 2017)

The search for the UK and Ireland’s most talented Lego builders continues. Nature is the theme this time as the remaining five teams take their construction skills into the great outdoors. The challenge is to create and install a spectacular brick display for a nature walk that will be transported to a woodland in Essex. From plants, animals and insects to mythical creatures, the teams can create whatever they want, but it must be full of character, wow the judges, and fit seamlessly into the environment. So how do you integrate a Madagascan crocodile into the Essex countryside? And there’s a frantic hunt on for a missing chrysalis. There’s also a quick-fire round to make as many miniature insects, birds and wild animals in 45 minutes, using no more than 15 bricks. Joining The Lego Group’s Matthew Ashton as guest judges is one of the world’s leading brick animal artists Sean Kenney, and comedian Bill Bailey.

In May 2017, a suicide bomber attacked a pop concert by Ariana Grande in Manchester, killing 22 people and seriously injuring 59. Many of the victims were children and their parents. This is the story of the events of that night and a city’s response over the past 100 days, featuring powerful and emotional testimony from those who were there and those who are rebuilding their lives. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

World’s Busiest Cities (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 30th August 2017)

Hong Kong. Dan Snow, Anita Rani and Ade Adepitan reveal the hidden systems and armies of people running some of the greatest cities on earth. This time, they are in Hong Kong, where space is at a premium and real estate is the most expensive in the world. Ade heads into the high rises to find people living in tiny spaces no larger than a cupboard. This former British colony, handed back to the Chinese in 1997, is a city driven by trade and commerce. Dan discovers how it is adapting to life in China’s embrace, while Anita learns about the city’s many traditions – from bamboo scaffolding to banishing bad spirits on the daily commute. Ade heads to the races at Happy Valley, and Dan discovers the history of the origins of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation – HSBC. Hong Kong is crowded, chaotic and facing an uncertain future. How does this city of contrasts manage the delicate daily balancing act that keeps it on track?

The search for UK and Ireland’s most talented Lego builders continues. This week the teams must step up a gear and make their models move. They have to build a funfair with at least one spectacular supersized mechanical ride, complete with moving parts and characterful stories in miniature form. While an inventive spinning laser ride draws the crowds to one fairground, a sandwich-stealing shark is a pest at another. The judges also throw them a curve ball with their unplanned challenge, where the teams find themselves having to quickly build a vehicle with no time to prepare. But that’s not the only surprise in store, as halfway through the challenge the judges give each team a new mode of transport and announce that they must create a hybrid of the two. One team must go home, so who will rise to the challenge and who has laid their very last brick in the Build Room?

In this episode, newly qualified 20-year-old Ryan Clyde has his first landing in Paris, in the dark and with passengers on board. One passenger has never flown before and is extremely nervous. Cadet Sophie is now back in the UK, learning how to deal with G-force, and the trainee captains take a jaunt to France to show off their experience to seven more trainees.

Off the coast of Bridlington, a kayaker has been missing for an hour and only the crews’ tidal knowledge can track him down. And when a fishing trawler sinks off the coast of the Shetland Islands, the fishermen and RNLI crew aboard must swim for their lives.

Lego Masters (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 24th August 2017)

The hunt is on for the UK and Ireland’s best Lego builders, as some of the country’s most skilled brick fanatics do battle to be crowned Lego Masters. In the first episode, 48 pairs are whittled down to just eight final teams through a series of challenges. Next, the eight teams must create a spectacular brick banquet, including an impressive chair that not only looks the part, but also strong enough for presenter Melvin Odoom. The teams must also make at least one supersized masterpiece for the banquet table. The results include a crispy aromatic duck and prawn toast, a hog roast, and a gravity-defying cuppa. Judging the models is a man who knows a thing or two about bricks, The LEGO Group’s Matthew Ashton, Vice President of Design. Joining Matthew this time is structural engineer Roma Agrawal, who will be looking at how the seats sit up under scrutiny. Two teams must be eliminated. Who will tower above their opponents, and who will come tumbling down under the pressure?

The airline has launched a large drive to recruit more pilots from all walks of life, including a particular focus on hiring more female pilots. The programme follows the rookies as they take their first steps from the flight-school classroom, into the flight simulator, and finally flying with hundreds of paying passengers on board. Becoming a pilot involves dedication and determination – but does the reality live up to the recruits’ dreams of flying high?

The Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes (more4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 15th August 2017)

There’s a palpable sense of urgency in the air in the Dales as lambing season starts for the hill farming Dawson family, with the arrival of forty lambs per day. In Swaledale, at Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, Vanessa and Nigel have survived the winter months but must now decide if running one of the remotest hostelries in Britain is really for them. Also, Ribblesdale primary, a 300-year-old village school in Horton, faces closure. And gamekeeper David Hutchinson and his team begin preparing the fells and woods for the shooting season.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In the first episode, a father and daughter find themselves treading water for almost an hour, hundreds of metres out at sea, after being swept out by a rip current. In Kinsale, Ireland, three fishermen swim for their lives as their trawler is smashed on to rocks. And in London, an unlucky tourist is minutes from hypothermia after his attempt to take a selfie lands him in the Thames.

Jill Douglas introduces live coverage of the RideLondon Classique, a newly credited UCI women’s WorldTour race. The event boasts the strongest ever field assembled for a one-day race in Great Britain as the world’s top 20 teams battle it out through the streets of central London. The new 5.5km circuit takes in many of the capital’s most iconic landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Strand and Trafalgar Square before it concludes on the Mall. In a watershed moment for women’s cycling, the prize money on offer is the highest ever for a women’s one-day race, matching that of Sunday’s men’s race. Simon Brotherton provides commentary with expert analysis from Chris Boardman and Rochelle Gilmore.

Live rider data and onboard cameras add to the coverage as the peloton heads out from Horse Guards Parade into the stunning Surrey countryside, before heading back to the iconic finish at The Mall. In the summer months, millions of Britains flock to the UK’s 11,000 miles of coastline, making it the busiest time of year by far for the RNLI. The army of unpaid volunteers has to contend with everything from overly ambitious novice sailors caught in a storm, to a little girl who has become trapped in the rocks below the high-water mark. The dangers of the water are further put into perspective when a father gets himself into serious difficulties after swimming out to try and rescue his young son, whilst a YouTube prankster deliberately flings himself from Tower Bridge for ‘a dare’.

Series exploring how the expansion of railways in the Victorian era transformed Britain. Historians Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn find out how the railways transformed the British diet, rescuing a nation that was struggling to feed itself. Alex and Peter load a flock of sheep onto a train, discovering how the mass transportation of livestock by rail transformed the quality and quantity of meat available to Victorian consumers. Ruth follows in the footsteps of Britain’s herring girls, revealing how the North Yorkshire Moors Railway revived the fortunes of Whitby, turning it into a thriving fishing town. Alex looks at how pioneering farmers attempted to use steam power to increase production. Peter discovers how steam-powered engines revolutionised production at Britain’s oldest brewery. In Yorkshire, Ruth sees how farmers created a monopoly on rhubarb. Meanwhile, Alex boards a locomotive on the watercress line in Hampshire.

Amazing Spaces: Shed of the Year (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 5th August 2016)

George Clarke’s mission to find Britain’s shed of the year continues. George and his fellow judges look at the Eco and Unexpected categories. Eco includes a mud hut in Norfolk and a shed on wheels. Featuring in the new Unexpected category is a shed located in a flood plain designed to rise up with the water. There is also an allegedly haunted shed.

Olympics 2016: Opening Ceremony (BBC 1/HD | 11:40pm to 4:00am | Friday 5th August 2016)

Clare Balding introduces live coverage of the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the games head to South America for the first time. The ceremony is a chance for participants from all 207 competing nations to parade with their flag in the iconic Maracana Stadium.
