At Worsley, Tim and Pru discover how in 1761, the building of the Bridgewater Canal, more than halved the price of coal in Manchester and launched a transport revolution. In Manchester, Tim and Pru discover a lesser known aspect of canal history when visiting Canal Street, which lies at the heart of the city’s LGBT+ community.

Swindon control discovers an intoxicated man running around the tracks, forcing them to shut the line. Engineers at Cowley Bridge near Exeter insert 24 huge culverts to ease flooding there. In Paddington, a drink-addled dentist is convinced he has left his bag on a train.

Before heading for the tough Lakeland summit of Scafell Pike, Paul meets the folk who run one of the country’s most scenic railways, he has a close encounter with a vulture, and gets to grips with the locals in a spot of Cumberland wrestling.

Simon Reeve embarks on the third leg of his epic four-part journey around the Mediterranean. He begins in Libya – a country torn apart by revolution, insurgents from the so-called Islamic State and western air strikes. Travelling west along North Africa’s Mediterranean coast, Simon journeys through Tunisia where he meets a man who is keeping Berber traditions alive by harnessing camel power to make olive oil and excavating rock by hand to build new Berber homes. From Tunisia, Simon boards the overnight ferry to Sicily. Here he meets three inspiring sisters who – despite constant intimidation – are making a defiant stand against the mafia.

Documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. Huge delays occur after a man is hit by a train at Southall, and more chaos occurs when the power out on track is accidentally switched off. Meanwhile, hundreds of train enthusiasts descend on Paddington to get a glimpse of the world-famous Flying Scotsman.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 23rd October 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). As storm Ophelia hits the British Isles, on the south east coast of Ireland the Rosslare crew try to rescue a small yacht with three people on board. In Devon, the crew at Appledore race an incoming tide to try and reach a man stuck fast in quicksand, while on the north coast of Cornwall, the crew of St Agnes must battle through huge breaking waves to reach two young boys being swept out to sea in a deadly rip current.

Without Limits: Australia (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 24th October 2018)

Two-part observational documentary following a team of injured British and Australian veterans as they embark on an extraordinary near 1000-mile expedition across Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome the veterans at the Invictus Games in Sydney after their dramatic expedition across Western Australia.

Professional deep-sea diver Adrian Corrigall is obsessed with concrete. He fell in love with this cold uncompromising material in the skateparks of Scotland. Now he’s convinced his wife Megan to agree to build their new family home in rural East Sussex almost entirely out of the stuff – both inside and out. No cladding, no carpets, no plaster or wallpaper – this will be as pure a concrete building as possible. Construction involves cutting-edge technologies conceived in Switzerland and never used to build a house before. The hope is these new mix recipes will overcome the historic negatives of concrete and keep costs down. However, the perils of being a pioneer soon become evident. With both schedule and budget under strain, Adrian is forced to resume work as a diver, servicing North Sea oil installations and taking him away for a month at a time. With Megan now left juggling the build, all the while looking after three young children, the concrete dream seems a long way off.

The Lakes with Paul Rose (BBC 2/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 26th October 2018)

Four-part series about the Lake District, the National Park that is now a World Heritage Site. In this episode, Paul Rose heads to Coniston, where he enters a retro-cycling event on a penny farthing before joining the mountain bikers of Grizedale Forest. He relives the final moments of Donald Campbell in his attempt to break the world water-speed record on Coniston Water, and ends his trek by climbing Dow Crag, before ascending to one of the area’s best-known hills, The Old Man of Coniston.

Heading into the wilderness, he discovers a legacy of habitation before the Highland clearances and learns how early industrial plans to exploit the vast reserves of peat would have destroyed an ecosystem which is now valued throughout the world for its wild beauty. Paul then pans for gold in an icy river before heading for a miracle cure at the Lourdes of the north – the tiny, deserted Loch ma Naire. Journey’s end is at Kyle of Tongue, where Paul learns about a consignment of Jacobite gold that could have changed history.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In north Wales, when police officer Vinny isn’t patrolling the streets of Rhyl, he volunteers for the lifeboat crew. When the pagers go off one summer evening, Vinny finds himself heading out into the darkness to try and rescue two teenage boys who have chased a wayward football into the sea and get caught in a treacherous current.

Right from the start, Born and Elinor are up against it, with access issues to their plot and the need to be super strict concerning suitable materials. It’s an immense burden and with the children still suffering weekly allergy attacks, a race against time to get moved in. But will their innovative new house deliver the benefits Elinor and Born are hoping for?

Kevin McCloud returns for a new series of the show that follows intrepid individuals trying to design and build their dream home. In Buckinghamshire he meets young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi as they embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II* listed folly into a family home. Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, but gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years, the crumbling mini castle beguiles Jaime and Mimi. Giving themselves a wildly optimistic six month deadline to finish before the birth of their second child, it’s not long before the couple hit trouble. The Saxon burial ground the folly is built on throws up some macabre surprises. Their stonemasons from Madrid let them down and local builders with no restoration experience have to take on the crumbling stonework. Jaime puts all his energies and creativity into the project, using innovative 3D mapping to squeeze living spaces into the tower, but it’s an exhausting struggle.

He meets the archaeologists and drone pilots that have been flying all over the country to record this transient phenomenon. In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team attempt their biggest and longest build yet – constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community. The team attempt to build a two-storey flexible-use centre that can be used by the community however it decides. Research indicated that there wasn’t enough low-cost space that different community groups could use in the area, so with the help of generous construction companies, suppliers and volunteers, the DIY SOS team attempt to do what they can to help. The team are joined by the Duke of Cambridge, who meets local residents and talks to firefighters who were among the first responders on the night of the fire. Along the way, Nick meets different groups who could benefit from the building of a new community space.

As the capital shudders in the wake of two terrorist attacks, specialist protection officer PS David Budd is more under pressure than ever to keep the home secretary Julia Montague safe. The threat to her life does nothing to curb Julia’s political ambitions, as her counterterrorism bill takes another step towards being made law, provoking political rivalries. With the police marginalised from the investigation into the attacks in favour of the security service, David is caught between his new-found loyalty to Julia and his superiors’ demands for intelligence on her activities.

Phil explores the magnificent Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and gets to know its formidable builders, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, and his wife Sarah. Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, Phil’s host, explains that the palace was a gift to the Marlborough family from their friend Queen Anne, a monument to the Duke’s victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. However, in the archive Phil discovers the build was plagued with problems: fall-outs with the architect, unpaid builders and costs beyond even the wildest estimates. Phil tots up a total in today’s money that makes Blenheim the most expensive house he’s ever visited.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 4th September 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In Brighton the crew are called out to what they think is just a routine job – towing a yacht that has lost power back to harbour – but a sudden spring squall and mountainous waves leave the crew fighting to save the yacht and themselves from being dashed on the shore.

Britain by Bike with Larry and George Lamb (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 7th September 2018)

Travelogue series with the father-and-son duo, exploring Britain’s most spectacular cycle routes from the saddle. The Lambs set off to conquer Snowdon but are blown off course, George puts a Llama display team through their paces, and they have to hang on tight when they try one of the longest zip wires in the world.

Events include the fast, gladiatorial 4X and the brutal downhill, which launches off from the top of the Nevis range, with the best riders in the world plummeting 555 metres down one of the longest and toughest courses on the circuit. Presented by Duncan McCallum and Dougie Vipond.

Flying Across Britain with Arthur Williams (Channel 4/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 26th August 2018)

Arthur’s final airborne journey covers the epicentre of Britain’s wartime aviation effort – the east coast. He visits four airfields that played a role in World War Two, but have completely changed since. First up is Lincolnshire, which once boasted 46 military airfields. Only five remain today. At East Kirkby, a local family have bought and preserved part of the former airbase as a memorial. Flying over East Anglia, Arthur has an overview of the staggering scale of the wartime ‘friendly invasion’ by tens of thousands of American servicemen. At RAF Lakenheath, he sees the US Air Force’s awesome F15 fighter. At Cranwell, he visits the world’s oldest and grandest air academy and home to the only aerobatic team in the world licensed to take passengers – and there’s no way Arthur’s leaving without hitching a ride.

Her political ambitions make Julia a high-profile target. Dedicated to his job but concealing deep resentment of politicians following his traumas in Helmand, David’s divided loyalties might make him Julia’s greatest threat.

In this revealingly intimate documentary, Adrian Chiles takes a long hard look at his own love of boozing. He wants to find out why he and many others don’t think they are addicted to alcohol, despite finding it almost impossible to enjoy life without it. Adrian, who drinks almost every day, decides to start a drinking diary and soon finds out his intake is way over the recommended limit. He decides to visit his parents to find out what it was that motivated him to start drinking as a teenager and reveals that sneaking into pubs underage was all about friendship and being part of something, and that the allure of the social side of drinking has never really left him since his teens.

As guest of its current owner, Lord David Cholmondeley, Phil uncovers a house clearly built without any limit on costs: It features some of the finest carved stone interiors ever created, jaw-dropping bedrooms, ‘beer taps’ in a marble dining room, and the most extravagant thing Phil has ever seen: a 17ft silver embroidered bed. It’s no wonder Sir Robert wanted to keep the costs – and how he raised the money – a secret; the truth could have rocked Parliament.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Keeping watch over the River Thames, the crew at Tower in central London, the busiest of the RNLI’s 238 stations, are called to a man reported in the water eight miles downstream. On arrival, they discover a river bus already on the scene and their crew desperately trying to hang on to the unmoving man before he disappears under the water.

Travelogue series with the father-and-son duo, exploring Britain’s most spectacular cycle routes from the saddle. At beautiful Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, Phil is invited by the Duke and Duchess of Rutland to learn how the castle was built – and discovers a Regency love story to rival Jane Austen. The present-day Duchess Emma introduces Phil to her Regency predecessor Duchess Elizabeth, and allows Phil exclusive access to the Belvoir’s usually off-limits archive. Phil learns that the castle’s creators had to sell whole villages to fund the building work, and reveals the mind-boggling total cost in today’s money. Phil encounters evidence of an aristocratic sex scandal painted on the ceiling, which was later disguised by royal decree. He searches for a lost railway under the castle, and tries his hand at modern-day pest control with a medieval twist.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The crew of Salcombe lifeboat station attend a mayday call to a fisherman pulled to the bottom of the sea ensnared in his own fishing gear, and a devastating fire on a boat 15 miles out in the channel. As they go to the rescue of a father and his 13-year-old son missing at sea, the crew of Moelfre station uncover a story of survival and heroism.

The Secret Life of Landfill: A Rubbish History (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:30pm | Thursday 23rd August 2018)

In a unique science experiment, Dr George McGavin and material scientist Zoe Laughlin chronicle the history of rubbish and explore how what we throw away tells us about the way we live our lives. With unprecedented access to one of the UK’s largest landfill sites, the team of experts spend three days carrying out tests all over the site, revealing the secret world of rubbish. They also carry out three other ‘archaeological’ digs into historic landfills to chart the evolution of our throwaway society. Ultimately, their quest is to discover whether the items we throw away today have any value for tomorrow’s world.

They remember the book Swallows and Amazons; visit a marshman’s cottage and the ruins of St Benet’s Abbey; and sail on a local Norfolk wherry.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 30th October 2017)

Documentary series going behind the scenes at Paddington, and the Western Network. Transport Police are called after a passenger urinates in a carriage on a train pulling into the station, a low bridge has to be assessed after it is hit by van, and a train’s brakes fail in Reading causing widespread delays.

Documentary series following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In Tenby, police searching for a boat thief call for lifeboat assistance. The Mumbles lifeguards and lifeboat crew race to help two kayakers adrift in a boat laden with beer. And when two yachts capsize off Portsmouth, the crew must make fast decisions about who to rescue first.

Documentary series following the work of Argyll and Bute council, charting the unique challenges faced by staff working hundreds of miles from the nearest city to provide services in difficult times. The programme meets the council workers going above and beyond to improve local lives.
