UK TV programmes to watch this week : 21/12/2024

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 10:00pm | Sunday 22nd December 2024)

A holiday-maker is killed while dressed as Father Christmas but Commissioner Patterson worries about the team’s ability to tackle such a case without the guiding hand of a chief investigator. So he is relieved to learn that a British detective inspector, Mervin Wilson, is currently holidaying on the island and arranges for him to extend his stay – just as reports come in that a second Santa has been shot dead. Don Gilet joins the team as DI Mervin Wilson, with Marcus Brigstocke, Jim Howick, Dex Lee, Elizabeth Carling and Angela Griffin.

All Creatures Great and Small (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:15pm | Monday 23rd December 2024) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

All God’s Creatures. Skeldale House prepares for Christmas and Jimmy’s first birthday, but everyone is rocked by news that Edward’s ship HMS Repulse has been sunk. Mrs Hall has to endure an agonising wait, but when a young boy arrives at the surgery with an abandoned fox cub, she can’t help feeling a connection with the animal. Meanwhile, Tristan is given an important Royal Army Veterinary Corps mission to source the best Yorkshire pigeons for a new breeding programme, for which Siegfried sends him to Enoch Sykes, a cantankerous pigeon fancier whose birds are having digestive problems. Festive episode of the drama, starring Samuel West.

Doctor Who (BBC 1/HD | 5:10pm to 6:10pm | Wednesday 25th December 2024)

Joy to the World. From a war-torn Manchester hotel in 1940 to the Orient Express travelling across Italy in 1962, the Doctor is determined to deliver a toasted sandwich and a pumpkin latte. The base camp at Everest in 1953 is also a wrong turn on his travels, but at the Sandringham Hotel in 2024, he meets a single woman called Joy. When she opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel, Joy discovers danger and dinosaurs. But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas. Festive edition of the fantasy saga, starring Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (BBC 1/HD | 6:10pm to 7:30pm | Wednesday 25th December 2024)

After a recent crime wave hits gardeners across the region, Wallace and his pre-programmed smart gnome, Norbot, are the main suspects. While the inventor proclaims his innocence, it’s up to faithful hound Gromit to battle sinister forces. Despite being locked up for his previous crimes, a certain penguin might have something to do with recent events. Animated adventure, with the voices of Ben Whitehead, Reece Shearsmith and Peter Kay.

Call the Midwife (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 25th December 2024)

Christmas 2024 (Part 1). The Poplar midwives and medics return for the first of a two-part festive special ahead of a new series next year. It’s Christmas 1969 and the Nonnatus midwives are as busy as ever, although their job is made even more difficult by a new strain of flu. Teddy Turner befriends a little girl whose family are living in abject poverty, learning they have no tree, presents or food for Christmas. The Buckles are excited about Reggie’s homecoming, and the residents are concerned to learn that an escaped prisoner may be in the local area.

Call the Midwife (BBC 1/HD | 7:30pm to 8:30pm | Thursday 26th December 2024)

Christmas 2024 (Part 2). Episode 2. The conclusion of a two-part episode. The People of Poplar Choir performance brings festive cheer and romance is in the air for Nancy when she is asked out by Roger Noble. They agree to go to the funfair, but a sudden accident brings their date to an abrupt end before Nancy has had a chance to address the fact she is a single mother. As concern grows for missing Reggie, the residents pull together to try to find him, while escaped prisoner Jock McKechnie has a personal reason for being in Poplar – only for events to escalate when he injures his hand.

Oh Mine Papa. Series 1, episode 6. Crabby local Vincent Ogden is found dead in his warehouse, and all signs point to suicide as the door was bolted from the inside and everyone who might have wanted him dead has a solid alibi. However, Mackenzie uncovers some dirty family secrets that put a new spin on the case and soon suspects she’s looking for a killer rather than a motive for suicide. Later, word from London arrives that Mackenzie has been cleared of misconduct and is free to return to the UK once she has wrapped up the case in Dolphin Cove. Detective drama, starring Anna Samson and Lloyd Griffith.

Beyond Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 27th December 2024)

Christmas Special 2024. Festive instalment of the detective drama. Humphrey and Esther try to unravel whether a widower’s ghostly visions are a manifestation of grief or something more sinister. Meanwhile, a break-in at the church leaves the Nativity scene incomplete. With the Christmas service fast approaching and CS Charlie Woods due to attend, Kelby hopes to solve the mystery of the missing Virgin Mary and impress the Chief Superintendent at the same time. Away from the station, Humphrey and Martha’s fostering journey continues as they open their home to an introverted teenager. Mark Heap guest stars, with Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

They reveal never-before-heard stories from the video that have remained a group secret – until now. Mary J Blige, Bob Geldof, Neil Tennant and Sam Smith are among those giving their views on the song’s themes of unrequited love and loss.

Marking 40 years since the release of festive classic Last Christmas, guitarist Andrew Ridgeley and backing singers Pepsi Demacque-Crockett and Shirlie Kemp present a selection of the duo’s biggest and best performances from the BBC archives. Featuring Young Guns (Go for It), Club Tropicana and The Edge of Heaven, these are the hits that made Wham! one of the hottest pop groups of the 1980s, and first introduced the world to the unique songwriting talents of George Michael.

There are four people in the frame for the crime, including Ted, but all seem to have plausible alibis. Detective drama, starring Anna Samson and Lloyd Griffith.

Killer Climate. Series 1, episode 4. An activist is mysteriously bludgeoned to death while chained to an excavator with his group during a protest. Mackenzie’s investigation soon finds her in a dilemma as of the four suspects, three were chained to the excavator with the victim and therefore unable to kill him, while the other in the frame had no motive to do so. Away from this case, Mackenzie also finds herself prevailed upon to patrol a local football match. Detective drama, starring Anna Samson and Lloyd Griffith.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 13th December 2024)

Boats & Trains. Series 8, episode 6. The presenter visits the Firth of Clyde, in Irvine, a harbour town steeped in shipping history – a fitting home for the Scottish Maritime Museum. She hears the history of this glass-roofed Victorian Linthouse which once stood in a shipyard on the Clyde, was salvaged and moved 30 miles to its current location. Susan also looks into scientific glassblowing, and meets a modelmaker who has created a version of the HMS Victory.

On the final leg of his odyssey, Alan Cumming gets a taste of another luxurious journey that only happens twice a year. He visits the sacred island of Iona, known as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, where he discovers the story of the historical Iona Marble Quarry, a precious stone first excavated in the late 1700s and exported around the world.

With Spider-Man’s identity now revealed to the world, Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange for magical help to undo the damage. However, a spell gone wrong unleashes dangerous foes from parallel universes on the world, forcing Peter to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man. Comic-book adventure sequel, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch, with Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina among the stars of past Spider-Man movies reprising their roles.

Tosh and Calder discover that Rossi has been conducting his own investigation into who killed Annie and Bergen and must figure out who the murderer is before he can exact his revenge. Why Bridges Collapse: The Baltimore Disaster (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 5th December 2024)

The March 2024 collision of 100,000-tonne container ship MV Dali into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Just four minutes after its departure for Sri Lanka, the vessel suffered a series of blackouts that caused the engine and steering to shut down. Despite attempts by the crew to regain power, the ship was set on a collision course with one of the bridge’s main supports. With exclusive access to the investigators and the salvage operation, this documentary follows the inside story of what happened next, in the words of the people who were there.

South Scottish Glens and Arran. Series 8, episode 5. The comedian explores the South Scottish Glens, before showing off the Isle of Arran where she holidayed when growing up. Susan starts her adventure by visiting a huge art installation called the Crawick Multiverse. From here, she takes a journey to Drumlanrig Castle, and eventually visits Blackwaterfoot, her favourite beach on the west of the island.

The Lake District. Series 1, episode 2. The comedian returns to the Lake District, and her latest adventure begins on Coniston Water, where Susan boards the 160-year-old steam yacht Gondola. Later she explores Dalemain House, home to the annual World Marmalade Awards. And in the town of Egremont, she meets an organiser of The Crab Fair, which has nothing to do with crustaceans and a lot to do with local crab apples.
