Acton Works. Series 3, episode 9. Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway snoop around TFL’s gargantuan maintenance facility – Acton Works.

Dan & Helen’s Pennine Adventure (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 29th August 2023) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

On the penultimate leg of their journey, Dan Walker and Helen Skelton explore the Yorkshire Dales. They begin in the stunning karst landscape of Beck, where they face their biggest challenge yet with a huge 100m abseil into Alum Pot, one of the Dale’s deepest caves. From there, they travel to Wensleydale, where Dan heads off to investigate one of Yorkshire’s culinary heroes, The Yorkshire Curd tart, before travelling across the epic Buttertubs Pass and eventually making their way across the Swaledale Valleys.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 30th August 2023)

DIY SOS Strictly Special. Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton Du Beke, Katya Jones and Graziano Di Prima join Nick Knowles and the team in Wallsend, Newcastle. Together, they set to work transforming the True Colours performing arts school, an inclusive dance school that teaches dance and theatre skills to 500 children and young adults weekly, many of whom have disabilities and learning needs. The school has grown substantially over time and they’ve completely outgrown their existing space, so the team get to work renovating a run-down old boys club that would give the dance school the extra space it so desperately needs to continue to transform more young lives.

The 1970s Supermarket (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 30th August 2023)

How supermarkets battled it out with price cuts and clever advertising campaigns as they fought to offer customers the best bargains, including the launch of the iconic ASDA price tap adverts. Elsewhere in the kitchen, chef Rustie Lee puts SMASH to the taste test against home-made mashed potato, and there’s also a look back at the launch of one of the most iconic advertising mascots in history, the Honey Monster.

Heathrow. Series 3, episode 7. Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway head to the sprawling Heathrow Airport underground stations – the first ever underground rail link between an airport and a city.

Dan & Helen’s Pennine Adventure (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 15th August 2023) ** PICK OF THE WEEK + NEW SERIES **

Dan Walker and Helen Skelton explore Britain’s first long-distance trail, the Pennine Way, travelling from Dan’s home in Sheffield up to Helen’s home in Cumbria. The pair begin their adventure in the Peak District, and from the stunning Bamford Edge, Dan and Helen survey The Pennine Way, stretching all the way to Scotland. Later, the duo cycle along the stunning, serpentine Snake Pass, before becoming the first members of the public to canoe along Standedge, Britain’s longest, deepest, and highest canal tunnel.

Susan Calman’s Big Seaside Holiday (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 18th August 2023)

Southwold. Series 3, episode 4. In Southwold on the Suffolk coast, Susan starts by viewing the charming seaside spot from the town’s lighthouse – which isn’t at all where you’d expect – before setting sail to explore Southwold from the sea. She also visits the picturesque village of Walberswick via one of the shortest and most fabulous ferry rides in the world, and Thorpeness, where she takes a rowing boat on a lake in the heart of the village. Susan also meets up with interior design guru Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen for a game of quoits on the beach and the pair also RSPB Minsmere nature reserve.

Disaster at Sea: The Great Storm of ’79 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:30pm | Wednesday 9th August 2023)

Documentary recounting the tragic events of August 1979, when one of the world’s leading offshore races – the Fastnet Race – was hit by hurricane-force winds and waves up to 60 feet high. The disaster took the lives of 21 people and left a lasting impact on weather forecasting and yacht safety.

Susan Calman’s Big Seaside Holiday (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 11th August 2023)

Margate. Series 3, episode 3. The comedian visits Margate on the Kent coast, where she tries her first tub of cockles, visits the mysterious Shell Grotto, and meets actress Sally Lindsay at pleasure park Dreamland. In nearby Broadstairs, Sally goes for a paddle as she discovers Charles Dickens’ love of this quaint seaside town. And back in Margate, Susan indulges her passion for toys at the Hornby museum.

Bournemouth. Series 3, episode 2. In Bournemouth, Susan takes a ride on the land train along the seven-mile stretch of sandy beach. She then heads to the lower gardens joining other holidaymakers to listen to the band playing in the historic Pine Walk Bandstand. Along the coast, she boards the ferry to Mudeford which boasts some of the best beach huts in the region. She also meets Gareth Malone for a game of Jenga.
