Doctor Who (BBC 1/HD | 7:00pm to 7:50pm | Sunday 4th November 2018)

Injured and stranded in the wilds of a far-flung galaxy, the Doctor, Yaz, Graham and Ryan must band together with a group of strangers to survive against one of the universe’s most deadly – and unusual – creatures.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 4th November 2018)

Timothy West and Prunella Scales embark on their first Latin American adventure and head for Argentina. A few miles from Buenos Aires, lies a vast labyrinth of canals and rivers that meander ever deeper into the jungle. Hiring a traditional cargo boat, known as a chatta, Tim and Pru voyage into the remoter corners of the Paraná delta. ‘When you’re my age, a trip from Wandsworth to Putney on a 37 bus can seem quite an adventure,’ remarks Pru. ‘And here I am in South America on a tramp steamer, heading into the jungle – I mean I can’t believe it.’ Tim and Pru discover the Belle Epoque splendour of the jungle town of Tigre. They visit a remote enclave of Anglo Argentines, who still drink G and T and toast the Queen. They also learn about the ‘dirty war’ of the 1970s. They marvel at the local flora and fauna and admire the hummingbirds, and perform Argentina’s national dance.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 5th November 2018)

The bank holiday works schedule is disrupted when reports come in of a trespasser on the relief lines outside of London, forcing the cancellation of all trains leaving Paddington station. However, the total shutdown allows the engineers onto the track to renew large sections of the ageing rail infrastructure.

Lego Masters (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 6th November 2018)

Lego Masters returns – the show in which some of the most skilled brick fanatics do battle to be crowned Lego Master. This year Lego Masters is bigger than ever. From thousands of applications, eight of the best amateur brick-building duos in the British Isles prepare to plunge their skills, creativity and imaginations into a series of challenges, to claim the title of Lego Masters Champion 2018. Melvin Odoom hosts and is joined by scientist and engineer-at-heart Fran Scott to co-judge alongside Matthew Ashton, the LEGO Group’s Vice President of Design. In the first episode, the eight teams must construct a 1.3m-long bridge, with no prior planning, over which Melvin will be driving a weighted remote-controlled dumper truck. Which bridges will come crashing down to earth?

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 7th November 2018)

Kevin McCloud embarks on a nationwide journey to examine some of the most cutting-edge contemporary homes, all of them in the running for the 2018 Royal Institute of British Architects House of the Year. In each episode, he exclusively reveals which houses the Riba judges have selected for the competition’s final shortlist. The last programme of the series will announce the winner of this prestigious prize. In this first episode, Kevin and his co-presenters architect Damion Burrows, and design expert Michelle Ogundehin, visit five extraordinary homes that dare to be different: a magnificent monolithic dark-rendered block in London; a controversial cutting-edge glass modernist building in Henley; a glorious north London townhouse filled with Nicaraguan mahogany; a beautiful bright red end-of-terrace property that stands out but also blends in; and a smart semi-detached home in Newcastle built by two neighbours working together.

The Great Model Railway Challenge (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 9th November 2018)

Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock. The final five teams compete on the theme A Journey Through Time, creating models based on the Cold War, the industrial revolution, 1950s West Country railways, the 2012 Olympics, and all the way into the future.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 9th November 2018)

Documentary series. Michael Portillo explores abandoned locations. The officers of the London Road Fire Station stood guard over the people of Manchester for 80 years through war, civil unrest and serial killers.

At Worsley, Tim and Pru discover how in 1761, the building of the Bridgewater Canal, more than halved the price of coal in Manchester and launched a transport revolution. In Manchester, Tim and Pru discover a lesser known aspect of canal history when visiting Canal Street, which lies at the heart of the city’s LGBT+ community.

Swindon control discovers an intoxicated man running around the tracks, forcing them to shut the line. Engineers at Cowley Bridge near Exeter insert 24 huge culverts to ease flooding there. In Paddington, a drink-addled dentist is convinced he has left his bag on a train.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 30th October 2018)

The RNLI volunteers race to try and rescue a teenager being swept out to sea on an inflatable, two girls caught in a rip current and a woman who has fallen from a cliff in Cornwall.

A suspected terror incident requires a large-scale response and brings back memories of the Manchester Arena attack for the paramedics.

Before heading for the tough Lakeland summit of Scafell Pike, Paul meets the folk who run one of the country’s most scenic railways, he has a close encounter with a vulture, and gets to grips with the locals in a spot of Cumberland wrestling.

Simon Reeve embarks on the third leg of his epic four-part journey around the Mediterranean. He begins in Libya – a country torn apart by revolution, insurgents from the so-called Islamic State and western air strikes. Travelling west along North Africa’s Mediterranean coast, Simon journeys through Tunisia where he meets a man who is keeping Berber traditions alive by harnessing camel power to make olive oil and excavating rock by hand to build new Berber homes. From Tunisia, Simon boards the overnight ferry to Sicily. Here he meets three inspiring sisters who – despite constant intimidation – are making a defiant stand against the mafia.

Documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. Huge delays occur after a man is hit by a train at Southall, and more chaos occurs when the power out on track is accidentally switched off. Meanwhile, hundreds of train enthusiasts descend on Paddington to get a glimpse of the world-famous Flying Scotsman.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 23rd October 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). As storm Ophelia hits the British Isles, on the south east coast of Ireland the Rosslare crew try to rescue a small yacht with three people on board. In Devon, the crew at Appledore race an incoming tide to try and reach a man stuck fast in quicksand, while on the north coast of Cornwall, the crew of St Agnes must battle through huge breaking waves to reach two young boys being swept out to sea in a deadly rip current.

Without Limits: Australia (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 24th October 2018)

Two-part observational documentary following a team of injured British and Australian veterans as they embark on an extraordinary near 1000-mile expedition across Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome the veterans at the Invictus Games in Sydney after their dramatic expedition across Western Australia.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 24th October 2018)

Professional deep-sea diver Adrian Corrigall is obsessed with concrete. He fell in love with this cold uncompromising material in the skateparks of Scotland. Now he’s convinced his wife Megan to agree to build their new family home in rural East Sussex almost entirely out of the stuff – both inside and out. No cladding, no carpets, no plaster or wallpaper – this will be as pure a concrete building as possible. Construction involves cutting-edge technologies conceived in Switzerland and never used to build a house before. The hope is these new mix recipes will overcome the historic negatives of concrete and keep costs down. However, the perils of being a pioneer soon become evident. With both schedule and budget under strain, Adrian is forced to resume work as a diver, servicing North Sea oil installations and taking him away for a month at a time. With Megan now left juggling the build, all the while looking after three young children, the concrete dream seems a long way off.

The Lakes with Paul Rose (BBC 2/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 26th October 2018)

Four-part series about the Lake District, the National Park that is now a World Heritage Site. In this episode, Paul Rose heads to Coniston, where he enters a retro-cycling event on a penny farthing before joining the mountain bikers of Grizedale Forest. He relives the final moments of Donald Campbell in his attempt to break the world water-speed record on Coniston Water, and ends his trek by climbing Dow Crag, before ascending to one of the area’s best-known hills, The Old Man of Coniston.

Their journey includes a visit to the Swiss lakeside town of Locarno; a speed boat; the spectacular gardens of Isola Bella; a traditional Italian barging song; wine; and a visit to Milan’s famous cathedral, the Duomo.

Identical twins Nik and Jon Daughtry run a graphic design company together. They drive the same car and even own identical dogs. Now these two brothers are building two near identical houses next door to each other in Sheffield. Raised up on steel stilts on the site of an old corn mill, the houses pay tribute to Sheffield’s industrial past. Huge steel frames with exposed blockwork and black steel cladding should create two sleek and modern family homes. But Nik and Jon’s plan is incredibly ambitious. Not only do they want to build the two houses for the price of one, but the materials and finish have to be absolutely perfect. With a tight budget, it’s an almighty stretch from the start. As delays, overages and imperfections hit, it’s clear the twins’ intuitive and incredibly close relationship will be tested like never before.

At first Tim is unsure, but Pru is determined: ‘…all the journeys I’ve done with him have opened doors for me and given me new and thrilling experiences’. Travelling from Luxor to Aswan, Tim and Pru uncover the secrets of this great artery of an ancient civilisation and discover how some of the first-ever canals were used to build the temple at Karnak. They also visit a Nubian village; purchase aphrodisiacs in the souk; and dance by moonlight.

Monkman and Seagull’s Genius Guide to Britain (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 8:30pm | Monday 8th October 2018)

University Challenge icons and real-life best friends Eric Monkman and Bobby Seagull visit Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales in search of hidden gems of British scientific and technological ingenuity. Their genius road trip concludes with a whistle-stop tour of some of Scotland’s most enigmatic scientific achievements. Their journey begins in Edinburgh at the birthplace of a little-known scientist who changed the face of history.

Glasgow, Love and Apartheid (BBC 2 Scotland & BBC iPlayer only | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 9th October 2018)

Documentary in which director Dhivya-Kate Chetty tells her family’s story. The film follows her parents Radha and Maggie on a trip from Glasgow back to South Africa and documents the effects of apartheid on one family spread across two continents – from the pain of migration, to the daily indignities of one of the abominations of the 20th century. The stories of several family members are blended to create a personal and moving account of apartheid and the fight for its downfall.

Chiropractor Steph Wilson has spent 20 years dreaming of living on her grandfather’s farmland in Leominster, Herefordshire, which was sold when she was 16. Steph and her husband Alex have re-mortgaged their current house to buy back 27 acres of the farm. Steph has secured planning permission for a sleek contemporary cantilevered farmhouse in the old gravel pit where she played as a child. She is determined to give her two young children a version of the blissful childhood she had. Steph and Alex are told their ambitious design will cost £500k – twice what they can borrow. Regardless, the family take a leap of faith and move into a draughty old caravan on site. It’s supposed to be a temporary solution. But after six months, caravan life is starting to look like it could become permanent. The family are in desperate need of a saviour, or their dream could turn into a nightmare. Then along comes Steph’s oldest friend.

Series in which Paul Murton takes a tour of Scotland’s lochs. In this edition, Paul heads to one of Britain’s remotest railway stations, which was built to service several grand sporting lodges in the days when the rich and fashionable came to shoot game and fish the lochs of the Flow Country. Heading into the wilderness, he discovers a legacy of habitation before the Highland clearances and learns how early industrial plans to exploit the vast reserves of peat would have destroyed an ecosystem which is now valued throughout the world for its wild beauty. Paul then pans for gold in an icy river before heading for a miracle cure at the Lourdes of the north – the tiny, deserted Loch ma Naire. Journey’s end is at Kyle of Tongue, where Paul learns about a consignment of Jacobite gold that could have changed history.

Drowning in Plastic (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 10:00pm | Monday 1st October 2018)

In this 90-minute special, wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin works with some of the world’s leading marine biologists and campaigners to discover the true dangers of plastic in our oceans and what it means for the future of all life on our planet, including us. Trillions of pieces of plastic are choking the very lifeblood of our earth, and every marine animal, from the smallest plankton to the largest mammals, is being affected. Can we turn back this growing plastic tide before it is too late?

At Paddington, a passenger has fallen between the train and the platform, while at Bristol, a BTP officer must talk down a potentially suicidal woman.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In north Wales, when police officer Vinny isn’t patrolling the streets of Rhyl, he volunteers for the lifeboat crew. When the pagers go off one summer evening, Vinny finds himself heading out into the darkness to try and rescue two teenage boys who have chased a wayward football into the sea and get caught in a treacherous current.

In the first ‘healthy’ home project ever seen on Grand Designs, gallery owner Elinor and fitness entrepreneur Born set themselves the near impossible task of creating Britain’s first hypoallergenic house in a leafy back garden plot in south west London. Driven by the need to alleviate their two young sons’ life-threatening allergies, their new part-submerged, shed-inspired home, will be constructed using low toxin materials and deploy cutting-edge filtration systems to clean the air they breathe. Right from the start, Born and Elinor are up against it, with access issues to their plot and the need to be super strict concerning suitable materials. It’s an immense burden and with the children still suffering weekly allergy attacks, a race against time to get moved in. But will their innovative new house deliver the benefits Elinor and Born are hoping for?

But even bolder is the giant five-bedroom house they want to build, heavily inspired by an American modernist house Harry saw in the 80s teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. All floating steel and glass, Harry by his own admission has become ‘obsessed’ with living somewhere just like it. But creating such an architecturally ambitious home would typically cost over a million pounds, and Harry and Briony have just £400,000 to play with.

Kevin McCloud returns for a new series of the show that follows intrepid individuals trying to design and build their dream home. In Buckinghamshire he meets young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi as they embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II* listed folly into a family home. Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, but gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years, the crumbling mini castle beguiles Jaime and Mimi. Giving themselves a wildly optimistic six month deadline to finish before the birth of their second child, it’s not long before the couple hit trouble. The Saxon burial ground the folly is built on throws up some macabre surprises. Their stonemasons from Madrid let them down and local builders with no restoration experience have to take on the crumbling stonework. Jaime puts all his energies and creativity into the project, using innovative 3D mapping to squeeze living spaces into the tower, but it’s an exhausting struggle.

Rob Bell explores the lost landscapes and infrastructure of some of Britain’s former railway lines. In Scotland, Rob follows the Elgin to Portsoy line, a line that once served the fishing and whisky industries. Local ramblers help him unearth a stunning view of the Spey Bridge, then, after trying a warming tipple of the hard stuff, he watches a boat race in Portsoy.

In an average week, crews across the West Midlands respond to 30 stabbings. Pete and Matt, a specialist trauma team, are called to treat the victim of a brutal knife attack. They carry out urgent medical intervention at the scene in a bid to save the man’s life. Paramedics Christine and Chris start their day shift with a man who has collapsed in Worcester town centre after a suspected drug overdose. They give him an opiate antidote to stop him slipping into a coma, but the effect is only temporary. With A&E departments across the region busy, ambulance crews face waiting times of up to two hours before they can hand over their patients. When Jo and Tracey are called to 90-year-old Dennis, who has been vomiting, they want to save him from the inevitable delay at hospital. But GP surgeries are under pressure too. and they can’t get through to his doctor. They have no option but to take Dennis to hospital and join the queue.

Tony Robinson tells the turbulent history of six of Britain’s cathedrals. Winchester is the longest medieval cathedral in northern Europe. It is also one of Britain’s oldest cathedrals and a monument to the wealth and power of the Normans. Kings and queens have been christened, married and laid to rest here.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 11th May 2018)

Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations. Imber Village was evacuated in 1943 to be used as a WWII training ground. Despite promises that the residents could return after the war, the village remains in the hands of the military today, and has been used for training against the IRA and the Taliban.

History series. Tony Robinson tells the turbulent history of six of Britain’s cathedrals. Liverpool cathedral is the Church of England’s newest cathedral, and it’s the largest in Britain. The cathedral was designed in the Gothic style by Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the red telephone box. It took 74 years to build and was paid for by money donated from the people of Liverpool.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 4th May 2018)

Documentary series. Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations. Since it opened 400 years ago, Shepton Mallet prison has seen thousands of prisoners, numerous executions and countless escape attempts. It has been home to gangsters, and during the Second World War a safe house for Britain’s most precious historic documents such as the Magna Carta.
