Derren Brown: Showman (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 11:30pm | Sunday 23rd April 2023)

This one-off special brings Derren Brown’s record-breaking, five-star show to TV. Written by Derren Brown, Andrew O’Connor and Andy Nyman, the award-winning team behind Miracle, Svengali and Derren’s BAFTA-winning Channel 4 specials, the critically acclaimed Showman is probably Derren’s most personal show to date.

Britain’s Most Luxurious Train Journeys (More4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 24th April 2023)

A trip aboard Scotland’s high-speed Midland Pullman train, which travels through the Perthshire town of Pitlochry, and the resort of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park. Passengers include a couple celebrating their anniversary, a mother bidding farewell to her daughter, and a woman who shares her alopecia story.

Leeds. Series 4, episode 9. Tim Dunn explores the birthplace of British locomotive manufacturing – Leeds, starting at the Round Foundry.

Britain by Steam (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 25th April 2023) ** NEW SERIES **

John Sergeant, Peter Davison and Paul Middleton travel from London to Scotland using only the power of steam. From barges and paddle boats to steam trains and traction engines, the trio use a wide range of steam machines to make their way up the country, and learn about the history and engineering genius of the machines they are travelling on along the way. Peter, John and Paul begin their journey in Greenwich, London, before traveling to Kings Cross station in an open-topped 1909 Stanley Steam car. Finally, they board The Duchess of Sutherland steam train to Stevenage where they view the fascinating vintage planes at the Shuttleworth Museum.

Race Across the World (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 26th April 2023) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

For the sixth leg of the race, the pairs must brush up on their language skills as the next stop is at the heart of French-speaking Canada, the capital of its largest province, Quebec. To get there, the teams must navigate through Canada’s most densely inhabited region. For the first time in the race, transport and accommodation choices will be plentiful – but potentially damaging for dwindling budgets.

South Devon. Series 4, episode 8. Tim Dunn revisits his childhood holiday haunts in South Devon, following the route of Brunel’s experimental atmospheric railway.

Race Across the World (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 19th April 2023) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

The teams reach the halfway point and set off on their journey to the fifth checkpoint over 3,000 kilometres away on Manitoulin Island. The race is on but the pairs only have one way out of Churchill – an overnight train south followed by two buses from hell. In what could be the tightest leg so far, the teams have limited options and must use their ingenuity to gain an advantage. The current leaders struggle on with only a quarter of their budget left after splashing out on an expensive taxi in the last leg. Zainib is feeling homesick leaving her and husband Mobeen with a decision to make and Monique and Ladi try to make a quick break from the other teams. Tricia fears she may have to cut her race short after receiving some bad news from home.

One Foot In The Grave: 30 Years of Laughs (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:30pm | Friday 21st April 2023)

A celebration of David Renwick’s classic sitcom, featuring interviews with Richard Wilson, Angus Deayton and Doreen Mantle. Wild Isles (BBC 1//HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 2nd April 2023)

Freshwater. Series 1, episode 4. The wildlife that lives in Britain’s freshwater environments. Atlantic salmon battle their way upstream in one of the greatest migrations on the planet, beavers slow the flow with their expert dam-building, and toadlets have to cross a killing zone patrolled by carnivorous leeches. Where rivers spread out to form beds of reeds, great crested grebes pair up in courtship ceremonies, and small agile birds of prey swoop low to catch dragonflies.

Cornwall with Simon Reeve (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Sunday 2nd April 2023)

Simon Reeve’s Return to Cornwall. The explorer goes back to the county as the energy and cost-of-living crisis began to take its toll to find out what life is like for the locals after the summer crowds have gone. Simon examines why Cornwall is one of the most desirable parts of the country and a favourite holiday destination while also being one of the most deprived counties in England.

Edinburgh. Series 4, episode 6. Tim Dunn explores railway ingenuity at Goole swing bridge in Yorkshire and takes in Edinburgh Waverley from roof to underground vaults.

The five pairs leave Dawson City and head south to the third checkpoint, 2,700km away in Alberta but the stakes are raised as the team who reach the destination last will be eliminated. Race leaders Trisha and Cathie enjoy a 25-hour lead over their nearest competitors but after hiring a car in the last leg they take a risk on car sharing their way to Alberta. Disaster strikes for Monique who injures herself at the checkpoint causing her and father Ladi a further three-hour delay. Zainib and Mobeen formulate a new strategy and Marc has to face his fears. Forty-five hours behind Trisha and Cathie are Claudia and Kevin, sitting in last place with their no-frills strategy.

Beyond Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 7th April 2023)

Reeling from Martha’s decision, Humphrey focuses his attentions on an inexplicable crime. A house has been burgled and all forensic evidence points to one suspect only. The only problem is that this suspect was locked up by Kelby in the station’s police cell. With the arrival of the suspect’s hardnosed lawyer, the team is under pressure to get results but with Humphrey distracted, it falls to Esther to take the lead on this investigation and crack the case. Meanwhile, despite her mother’s protestations, Martha remains firm, however painful it might be. Detective drama, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.
