UK TV programmes to watch this week : 06/04/2024

Great Coastal Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Monday 8th April 2024) ** NEW SERIES **

Axminster to Budleigh Salterton. Series 3, episode 1. Michael Portillo explores the shores of Britain, with his first week’s journey taking him from the Jurassic Coast to the tip of the Lizard Peninsula and beyond to the Isles of Scilly. In Lyme Regis, Michael traces the discoveries of palaeontologist Mary Anning as he walks along a limestone ledge known as the Ammonite Pavement. He then visits the HQ of the Meteorological Office in Exeter to present the weather forecast, before watching flour being ground at a 1,000-year-old water mill on the banks of the River Otter.

Exeter to Plymouth. Series 3, episode 2. Michael Portillo arrives in Exeter, where he joins the stonemasons charged with conserving the cathedral’s medieval stonework from Beery Quarry. On the rooftop he watches the team restore the 14th-century South Quire Clerestory. His final stop is the city of Plymouth, which has a rich maritime and military history.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 9th April 2024)

Caught Out. Series 7, episode 3. In Queensferry, near Glasgow, an American visitor is caught out by the tide – and is barely conscious when the RNLI crew drag him out of the water. In Portishead, on the Severn estuary, a man’s leap from a party boat lands him in serious trouble. On the south coast of Cornwall, the Lizard crew race to the rescue of four people who are stranded on rapidly submerging rocks.

Tintagel to St Austell. Series 3, episode 3. Michael Portillo discovers the archaeological history of an important trading site at Tintagel Castle, and then visits the landscaped park of Boconnoc, where he meets an artist who paints Cornwall’s natural wonders, striving to protect them from environmental damage. Michael also hears about the discovery of a thunderbox at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which led the gardens to be uncovered and restored.

Race Across the World (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 10th April 2024) ** NEW SERIES + PICK OF THE WEEK **

Five teams race from Hokkaido, the most northerly island of Japan, to the Indonesian island of Lombok, crossing six seas and eight borders and skirting the path of the volcanic ring of fire without being able to use phones or credit cards. The teams face a 1,600km journey to the first checkpoint in Nara City where only a small percentage of the population speak English.

St Mawes to Porthcurno. Series 3, episode 4. Michael Portillo stops off in the Cornish fishing village of St Mawes, from where he takes to the waves in a 1938 racing yacht. He also joins a seaweed company on a harvesting mission and enjoys a ride on the footplate of a steam engine on the Helston Railway. From Penzance, he heads for the rugged coastline at Porthcurno, where he visits the Minack Theatre – a spectacular amphitheatre that has been built into the cliffs.

Isles of Scilly. Series 3, episode 5. Michael Portillo ends his railway adventure around south-west England in the Isles of Scilly. From Penzance railway station he boards a helicopter to the island of Tresco, two and a half miles long and with a population of 150 – a tiny slice of paradise with sandy beaches and a magnificent abbey – and where he enjoys watching the traditional gig racing. He also visits St Mary’s, where an archaeologist teaches him about the rich prehistory of the islands.

Beyond Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 12th April 2024)

When a priest from a Catholic boarding school suddenly disappears, Humphrey and Esther find that the case bears uncanny similarities to local myth The Devil on the Rocks. With a large sum of money missing from the school safe, the headmistress reluctant to aid the investigation and the priest nowhere to be found, the team members have their work cut out trying to pin down the truth. Meanwhile, Zoe helps Martha clean up Ten Mile Kitchen after a break-in, Anne’s new flame helps her move onto the Lily Bond, as Humphrey and Martha take over her house. Drama, starring Kris Marshall, Sally Bretton and Zahra Ahmadi.

The Coastal Map of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 12th April 2024)

Documentary examining the rise and fall of the UK’s greatest ports. The programme spans the first international traders arriving on the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, through the arrival of the Romans, Elizabeth I’s extension of British territory, and the huge impact of the tea trade and the Industrial Revolution.

Great British Cities with Susan Calman (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 12th April 2024)

Bath. Series 1, episode 6. The presenter is in Bath, starting her journey at the famous Roman Baths, where she peels back 2,000 years of history. Susan then meets author Jem Roberts, who reveals the origin story of the city, set centuries before the Romans arrived. She also visits the Royal Crescent, Herschel Museum of Astronomy, and learns about a 1950s racing scandal, and the impact of Nazi air raids.

First Time for Everything. Series 9, episode 4. In Castletownbere, Donagh faces a baptism of fire on his first ever shout, as the crew rescue a fisherman who’s suffered a suspected stroke. On the Somerset coast, the crew are called out to a Mayday from a houseboat that is sinking fast. In Newquay, a surfer has been caught out by the stormy seas, and is struggling to back it back to shore.

Beyond Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 5th April 2024) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

A fishing trawler heads out to sea with three brothers and their ailing stepmother aboard. When it returns to Shipton Abbott harbour several hours later, only the three fishermen remain. A note found on deck suggests the woman took her own life. As her estranged daughter comes to town to help make funeral arrangements, the simple case grows more complex. Elsewhere, the day of the house visit arrives, though it’s no plain sailing for Humphrey and Martha. Detective drama, starring Kris Marshall, Sally Bretton, Zahra Ahmadi and Peter Davison.

The Underground Map of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 5th April 2024)

A fact-fuelled ride through London’s tube network, mapping out the history of the world’s first – and most iconic – underground railway system. Viewers discover how this 160-year-old marvel of engineering manages to carry 1.3 billion passengers a year.

Glasgow. Series 1, episode 5.  The presenter is in Glasgow, uncovering the hidden history of her home city. Susan meets Professor Maria Fletcher to uncover the inspiring life of Madge Easton Anderson, a trailblazer who became the first female lawyer and forged the path of Susan’s own life. The comedian also delves into the Victorian entertainment scene with a look at the world’s oldest surviving music hall.

Every Second Counts. Series 9, episode 3. In Porthcawl, a fisherman is dragged lifeless out of the sea by bystanders and the lifeboat crew race to the beach to join the desperate attempts to resuscitate him. A yacht loses control in Lytham St Annes and is in danger of breaking up on nearby Blackpool beach. The Poole crew are called out at 2am to look for a man who has fallen into the harbour.

The Sewer Map of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 29th March 2024)

Documentary investigating the hidden secrets of one of our oldest, and most crucial, networks – the sewers. A tour of the latest solution – London’s Tideway Tunnel – reveals its staggering scale – a 16-mile-long storage tank to hide sewage beneath the river Thames. There is also a trip to Hadrian’s Wall to marvel at how the Romans handled the sewage issue almost 2,000 years ago. Mark Benton narrates.

Leeds. Series 1, episode 4. The comedian travels to Leeds, and starts by delving into the city’s industrial past, visiting the iconic Armley Mill. Now a museum, Susan gets up close and personal with the working conditions of the industrial revolution. She then visits Hyde Park Picture House, a surviving First World War cinema. As her journey comes to an end, Susan meets Arthur France, the man responsible for the Leeds West Indian Carnival.

The team find themselves split between Saint Marie and the island of Saint Auguste, attempting to investigate the mysterious death of a British tourist. When the team uncover a series of startling connections between the victim and other guests at the hotel they were staying at, they realise nothing is quite what it seems in this case. Neville prepares to make a huge next step in his life, and a familiar face returns.

999. Series 9, episode 2. In Dungeness, the crew respond to reports of a small boat in the middle of the shipping lanes, and on the way back to the station they discover the casualty is the subject of a major manhunt. Along Kent’s coast, the Walmer crew race to rescue two divers who have become separated from their support vessel, and in Kinghorn the crew receive a call about an injured sailor near the deserted Inchkeith Island.

Humphrey and Esther join the Shipton Abbott Players for a murder mystery rehearsal. Though Humphrey is only playing a detective, things turn from amateur to professional when the actor playing the victim is found dead with a real knife in his back. As the duo tackle the perplexing crime, they soon unravel a dark past that reveals hidden connections between the actors. Away from the case, Humphrey and Martha embark on the process of becoming foster parents, while Anne catapults herself into the world of online dating. Detective drama, starring Kris Marshall, Sally Bretton and Zahra Ahmadi.

The Railway Map of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 22nd March 2024)

How the invention of the railway at the dawn of the 19th century changed the world, and the lives of engineers such as Stephenson, Telford and Brunel. Though great wealth was made on the back of steam power, many rail lines couldn’t break even and huge swathes of them were eventually axed from existence. Cameras also reveal how Britain’s railways are on the move again as HS2 plans to connect the most influential cities with their own high-speed, high-capacity rail line.

Cambridge. Series 1, episode 3. The comedian explores Cambridge, and enjoys a punt down the river Cam. Later she heads to Fitzbillies, an iconic Cambridge bakery that has fed the city’s students and town folk for over 100 years.

Sharleen Spiteri takes a dive into the BBC’s music archive to select the Glasgow band’s greatest appearances on a selection of programmes and live events from across their 35-year career. It’s a collection featuring all of their biggest hits, from I Don’t Want a Lover and Black Eyed Boy to Summer Son and Say What You Want, combined with Sharleen’s memories of several of her own favourite moments, including last year’s triumphant return to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury, dressing up as Elvis and a key collaboration with hip-hop icons the Wu-Tang Clan.

Texas with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC 2/HD | 10:15pm to 11:15pm | Saturday 9th March 2024)

The band join forces with the 60-piece BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at Glasgow’s Barrowland in an event recorded for BBC Music Day in 2017. Vic Galloway introduces the collaboration, which includes performances of Black Eyed Boy, Summer Son and I Don’t Want a Lover.

World’s Most Dangerous Roads (Dave | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 10th March 2024)

Namibia. Series 5, episode 4. Mike Wozniak and Ola Labib head to one of the wildest places on Earth – the Namib desert – to meet for the first time and have each other for company on their journey.

A tourist is stabbed whilst travelling down one floor, all alone, in a hotel lift.
