Michael Buerk travels Britain to explore the innovations of the Victorian age. Cotton’s place at the heart of mass production is examined, via the creation of the first inter-city railway, a game-changing industrial loom and the birth of the Manchester Ship Canal.

Series in which Paul Murton takes a tour of Scotland’s lochs. In this edition, Paul travels from Britain’s most westerly mainland point to a place once guarded by an ancient Celtic goddess. On the way he discovers how the ancient oak woods of Loch Sunart were once a hive of industry, then goes deep underground to discover how 18th-century miners named a new element. On the shores of Loch Linnhe, he meets the owner of a castle and recreates a scene from Monty Python’s Holy Grail, before ending his grand tour from the heights of the pap of Glencoe.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 24th September 2018)

Behind-the-scenes documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. A heatwave hits the network hard, with signalling equipment out at Didcot, rails in need of stretching in London, and a surfeit of insects overworking trains’ windscreen wipers.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 25th September 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). On the north coast of Kent, new crew member Ruth is on board for one of her first ever shouts – a member of the public has spotted what looks like an upturned boat out at sea.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 26th September 2018)

Harry and Briony Anscombe have made a radical change to their lives, moving with their three young children from London to Cornwall – and setting up an outpost of their media business at the same time. It’s a bold attempt to emulate the positive work-life balance and lifestyle they experienced in California. But even bolder is the giant five-bedroom house they want to build, heavily inspired by an American modernist house Harry saw in the 80s teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. All floating steel and glass, Harry by his own admission has become ‘obsessed’ with living somewhere just like it. But creating such an architecturally ambitious home would typically cost over a million pounds, and Harry and Briony have just £400,000 to play with.

Michael Palin in North Korea (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 27th September 2018)

Travelogue series into the notably private nation. Under the protection of armed guards, Michael discusses the country’s nuclear weapons programme with an army lieutenant, visits a massive tourist resort being constructed on the beach, and embarks on a hike through the stunning landscape.

The team try out a range of new tests, new races and new motors from around the world. As well as meeting motoring legends, they put top supercars through their paces!

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 28th September 2018)

Rob Bell explores the lost landscapes and infrastructure of some of Britain’s former railway lines. Beginning in the famous steel town of Sheffield, Rob follows the line over the bleak Pennines, discovering a miniature railway in Wortley and the record-breaking Woodhead Tunnel, before landing in the industrial powerhouse of Manchester.

Bodyguard (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Sunday 16th September 2018)

Determined to push the investigation forward, principal protection officer David Budd targets enemies of home secretary Julia Montague. As he delves into Julia’s political manoeuvring before the attack, David’s theories about a conspiracy at the heart of government look increasingly plausible. But when concerns are raised about David’s psychological health, and allegations about his professional conduct come to light, the finger suddenly points at him. Friendless in a high-stakes game, David realises too late that he himself could be a target.

Behind-the-scenes documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. An intruder puts his life at risk by running along the tracks. Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). At Anstruther station in Scotland, one of their newest helms, George, takes charge for his first shout to a serious medical evacuation.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 19th September 2018)

Kevin McCloud returns for a new series of the show that follows intrepid individuals trying to design and build their dream home. In Buckinghamshire he meets young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi as they embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II* listed folly into a family home. Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, but gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years, the crumbling mini castle beguiles Jaime and Mimi. Giving themselves a wildly optimistic six month deadline to finish before the birth of their second child, it’s not long before the couple hit trouble. The Saxon burial ground the folly is built on throws up some macabre surprises. Their stonemasons from Madrid let them down and local builders with no restoration experience have to take on the crumbling stonework. Jaime puts all his energies and creativity into the project, using innovative 3D mapping to squeeze living spaces into the tower, but it’s an exhausting struggle.

Travelogue series into the notably private nation. Michael arrives in the capital Pyongyang, where he meets the guides who will follow his every move, visits the statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, watches propaganda art being created, and asks a local student what they know about the outside world.

Jason Plato is joined by former F1 driver Karun Chandhok to see who will be crowned king of the hot-hatches. The team test the first Mercedes pick-up truck, the X-Class.

Britain by Bike with Larry and George Lamb (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 21st September 2018)

Travelogue series with the father-and-son duo, exploring Britain’s most spectacular cycle routes. Larry and George tackle the Hebridean Cycle Way, en route meeting a weaver of Harris Tweed, having a kick about on one of the world’s most spectacular football pitches, before enjoying a bagpipe lesson from the Lewis Pipe Band.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 21st September 2018)

Rob Bell explores the lost landscapes and infrastructure of some of Britain’s former railway lines. In Scotland, Rob follows the Elgin to Portsoy line, a line that once served the fishing and whisky industries. Local ramblers help him unearth a stunning view of the Spey Bridge, then, after trying a warming tipple of the hard stuff, he watches a boat race in Portsoy.

How the Victorians Built Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Saturday 8th September 2018)

Michael Buerk travels Britain to explore the innovations of the Victorian age. Michael reveals how Victorians created the sewer system, providing fresh, clean water for all. The revolution began in Liverpool, which suffered the highest mortality rates in the country. But it took the Great Stink of 1858 to convince Parliament to create a sewer system for the capital.

The home secretary’s principal protection officer David Budd struggles to come to terms with the fallout from the devastating events of the last 24 hours. The police retake control of the investigation into the attacks from the suddenly weakened security service, and David is questioned by counterterrorism detectives DCI Deepak Sharma and DS Louise Rayburn. Pushed to breaking point, David is helped back on his feet by his estranged wife, Vicky, and is determined to play an active role in the investigation, starting with those closest to Julia in government. At first Rayburn wants to keep David out of the enquiry, until he delivers a breakthrough.

One of the hottest summers on record is creating an adrenalin rush among Britain’s aerial archaeologists. As their drones take to the skies, they are uncovering significant new finds emerging from the parched landscape. All over the country, hundreds of unknown historic sites have been revealed from the air. And it’s not just the professionals that are striking gold – an army of drone-flying amateurs have made some incredible discoveries. In this Heatwave special edition of Hidden Britain by Drone, history and archaeology enthusiast Sir Tony Robinson investigates how this summer’s long dry spell created the perfect conditions for the mysterious ‘parch marks’ that led to these remarkable discoveries. He meets the archaeologists and drone pilots that have been flying all over the country to record this transient phenomenon. Once it rains, the marks disappear, but the hidden secrets have been revealed – now it’s a question of what happens next to these hidden historic gems.

On the Lilly Loch in Knapdale forest he gets a glimpse of beaver, before joining a group of steam enthusiasts restoring an old puffer on the Crinan Canal. Stone Age rock art leads him north to Loch Awe, where he drives a herd of Highland cows towards his final destination – the mountainous heights of Ben Cruachan.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 12th September 2018)

In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team attempt their biggest and longest build yet – constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community. The team attempt to build a two-storey flexible-use centre that can be used by the community however it decides. Research indicated that there wasn’t enough low-cost space that different community groups could use in the area, so with the help of generous construction companies, suppliers and volunteers, the DIY SOS team attempt to do what they can to help. The team are joined by the Duke of Cambridge, who meets local residents and talks to firefighters who were among the first responders on the night of the fire. Along the way, Nick meets different groups who could benefit from the building of a new community space.
