Nick Knowles and the team head to Barnstaple in Devon to help Jan and Lucy, whose daily four-hour round trips to hospital for life-saving dialysis treatment for two of their daughters is taking a heavy toll on family life. Along with designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and hundreds of local volunteers, Nick and the crew extend their house to create a home dialysis centre, enabling the girls to be treated where they live and letting the whole family settle into a healthier and happier routine.

Kate Humble’s Coastal Walks (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 19th February 2021)

The naturalist enjoys an 11-mile walk in Exmoor along the South West Coast Path, regarded as one of the most beautiful such paths in the world. Starting at Porlock Weir, Kate heads to St Bueno’s, a tiny parish church that seats just 33 worshippers – and which holds a dark past. She then heads inland to see the valley that inspired RD Blackmore’s 1869 novel of outlaws and revenge, Lorna Doone. At Lynmouth, Kate rides the world’s highest and steepest water-powered railway, before finishing her walk seemingly on top of the world in the Valley of Rocks.

Professor Alice Roberts visits Portsmouth to investigate the history of the Royal Navy, uncovering some uncomfortable truths behind the myth surrounding Lord Horatio Nelson and getting first-hand experience of what life would have been like in the heat of battle at Trafalgar. She also visits an archaeological dig on Burrow Island and a lantern show at the New Theatre Royal, and discovers the brutal punishments doled out for even minor offences by the Victorian penal system.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 23rd November 2020)

Staff at Bristol Temple Meads have their work cut out as they prepare for the station’s 180th birthday celebration, while Slough station is evacuated when a suspicious package is found underneath a stairwell. At Paddington, there is a commotion on Platform 12 as staff attempt to find the source of a fire alarm before the station’s automatic evacuation message is activated.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 24th November 2020)

Volunteers in Hastings rush to the aid of a surfer, who had sought to take advantage of the huge waves created by a storm at sea, but has now ended up going missing. On the north coast of Cornwall, the crew of St Agnes race to reach three people caught in a treacherous rip current that is pulling them out to sea, while in Scotland, the crew of Invergordon lifeboat is called out when two men are spotted clinging to an oil rig’s anchor chain.

After 15 years of fostering, Stephen and Lynn Smedley were looking forward to their well-earned retirement in Carbis Bay, Cornwall. However, the dream dramatically changed when their daughter died, leaving them caring for their three grandsons. The boys, still grieving for their mum’s untimely death, are forced to share a single bedroom with a triple bunkbed. There is only one bathroom and Lynn is forced to do the ironing in the shed due to lack of space. Enter Nick Knowles and the team. Their plan is to reconfigure and enlarge their home to accommodate three growing boys – with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 26th November 2020)

Coronavirus is spreading and the British public are told to stay away from pubs. Tom and the landlords he has been supporting face a moral dilemma. Do they keep trying to trade or do they close their doors to fight the virus? However, on March 20 the decision is taken out of their hands when the Prime Minister tells all pubs to close until further notice. Tom started this journey to save four pubs from going under, now every pub in Britain, his own included, find themselves in a fight for survival.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 27th November 2020)

Rob Bell discovers the now-abandoned lines that unlocked the wild coastline of north Devon. He begins by following the dramatic Barnstaple and Ilfracombe Railway, which once built, proved an instant success, eventually carrying the glamorous Atlantic Coast Express service, direct from London Waterloo. He crosses to the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, which traverses the wild terrain of Exmoor up to the cliff-top village of Lynton. Rob follows the adventurous, narrow-gauge route, discovering the extraordinary tale of the line’s construction and the very short section that has been fully restored.

They visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills, which built its own canal system to transport volatile ammunition – vital to Britain’s success in both world wars.

Cornwall with Simon Reeve (BBC 2/HD | 8:10pm to 9:10pm | Sunday 15th November 2020)

In the conclusion of his two-part journey, Simon Reeve investigates the environmental challenges facing Cornwall and the rest of the country. He discovers how the region’s farmers are adopting new, less intensive approaches that are both more profitable and environmentally friendly, and reveals how reintroducing beavers to the uplands could tackle the problem of widespread flooding. He also encounters some of the county’s iconic wildlife, including grey seals that live in constant risk of getting caught up in discarded fishing nets.

A major track circuit failure results in the closure of one of the busiest platforms and the technicians trying to fix the problem race against time to complete the job before rush hour begins. Staff and passengers are excited about the arrival of a West Country heritage steam train, while reports come into Route Control at Swindon of a very serious incident of suspected track sabotage.

Nick Knowles meets Scunthorpe woman Caroline Blanchard, a single mum who has twice had to make the decision to turn off the life support for people she loves. She and her children live in the shadow of the garage, where seven-year-old Natasha banged her head in 2007, and the conservatory, where husband and father Paul had a heart attack four years later. The volunteers plan is to give them a new home for a new start, including demolishing the conservatory and garage where these two tragedies occurred.

Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 19th November 2020)

Tom visits the Black Bull in the village of Gartmore in Stirling. Struggling to survive, it was put on the market and 250 locals clubbed together to buy it. Now the pub is staffed entirely by volunteers and the management are planning to renovate the bedrooms to attract tourists. But Tom has his concerns. He also catches up with the staff of the pubs he is helping in Cornwall, south London and Stroud – but just when all the hard work seems to be paying off, the pandemic strikes. Now every pub in Britain faces a fight for survival.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 20th November 2020)

The isles of Lewis and Harris form Britain’s largest offshore island, with a rich history dating back thousands of years. Susan seeks out the home of the world-famous Harris Tweed, visiting a local weaver where she tries her hand at making some of the fabric. Then in Habost, she learns how to Step Dance – a centuries old practice that was almost lost from Scotland for ever. At Callanish, Susan visits some awe-inspiring Neolithic giants – 49 standing stones, predating Stonehenge and steeped in mystery. Nearby, she learns the secret to jewellery making that captures the texture of these ancient standing stones.

She discovers how moving up the social ladder in medieval times required a whole new wardrobe of clothing and accessories and gets top grips with a historically accurate crossbow. Aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson uses the latest drone technology to look at the geographical features that shaped the city’s development.

Cornwall with Simon Reeve (BBC 1/HD | 8:10pm to 9:10pm | Saturday 7th November)

The first of two programmes in which Simon Reeve travels through Cornwall as the county emerges from lockdown, discovering the impact of Covid-19 on a part of the country highly reliant on tourism. Simon discovers the ongoing impact of the collapse of the tin-mining industry in the 1980s when he visits one of Britain’s poorest estates, and meets the entrepreneurs who sell homemade food on the beach who are struggling to make enough money to last the winter.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 9th November 2020)

A passenger drops her overnight bag on the tracks and threatens to jump down to retrieve it, while a major power cut at Maidenhead has caused signalling to fail on all the tracks, including the main line into Paddington. At Great Western Railway’s Long Rock Depot, the famed Night Riviera sleeper service departs once more after a three-month suspension due to the pandemic, but with radical changes.

The River Thames: Then & Now (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:05pm | Monday 9th November 2020)

A look at the development of the London railway terminus from its opening in 1852 to the present, as it has been transformed it into one of the best connected places in Britain. In Victorian Britain, King’s Cross became a thriving industrial hub, bringing in goods to feed and power London, while 20 industrial buildings that once its beating heart have been given a new lease of life and is now a tech hub that is home to Google, Facebook and Youtube.

Holby City (BBC 1/HD | 8:15pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 10th November 2020)

Ric wakes up from his coma to find the world in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic – and that the ongoing crisis threatens his chance of surviving his recent brain surgery. Sacha’s colleagues are concerned by how he is taking Essie’s death, but he turns his back on them in favour of a stranger, while Cameron struggles to prove that he can be a hero.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 10th November 2020)

The crew of a Weston-super-Mare lifeboat race to the aid of three casualties who have been caught by a rising tide and are exhausted from trying to swim against the current. On the northeast coast of England, volunteers come to the aid of a father and son trapped against a cliff face, while in Swanage, two lifeboats are launched to attend to a grounded yacht and a badly injured sailor.

Nick Knowles and the team descend on Caswell Bay, Swansea, to transform a dilapidated, out-of-use bus shelter into the first, fully adapted surf centre Surfability UK, a charity that provides surfing lessons and experiences for people with disabilities and learning difficulties, and which receives funding from Children in Need. Throughout, Nick presents stories of how children and young people have benefitted from the support of the charity, but the challenge remains tough as this is the team’s first build during Covid-19.

Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge (BBC 2/HD| 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 12th November 2020)

For the past 20 years, pubs have been closing down at an alarming rate. Concerned by a crisis in the industry he loves, Tom Kerridge sets out on a mission to revive struggling pubs. He begins at the White Hart in Chilsworthy, Cornwall, where a 300-year-old freehouse, the only pub in the village, is in danger of closing.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 13th November 2020)

The comedian ventures off the mainland to the Isle of Bute for a privileged look at what is said to be Scotland’s first million-pound home – Mount Stuart House. In Argyll, Susan visits Kilmartin Glen, an ancient valley and home to the Scotti people who gave Scotland its name. She visits a Bronze Age tomb and learns how to make a copper axe in the way they were made thousands of years ago. Then, on the shores of Loch Fyne, she discovers the secrets of oyster cultivation before looking for beavers in the beautiful Knapdale Forest.

The home secretary’s principal protection officer David Budd struggles to come to terms with the fallout from the devastating events of the last 24 hours. The police retake control of the investigation into the attacks from the suddenly weakened security service, and David is questioned by counterterrorism detectives DCI Deepak Sharma and DS Louise Rayburn. Pushed to breaking point, David is helped back on his feet by his estranged wife, Vicky, and is determined to play an active role in the investigation, starting with those closest to Julia in government. At first Rayburn wants to keep David out of the enquiry, until he delivers a breakthrough.

As their drones take to the skies, they are uncovering significant new finds emerging from the parched landscape. In this Heatwave special edition of Hidden Britain by Drone, history and archaeology enthusiast Sir Tony Robinson investigates how this summer’s long dry spell created the perfect conditions for the mysterious ‘parch marks’ that led to these remarkable discoveries. He meets the archaeologists and drone pilots that have been flying all over the country to record this transient phenomenon. Once it rains, the marks disappear, but the hidden secrets have been revealed – now it’s a question of what happens next to these hidden historic gems.

On the Lilly Loch in Knapdale forest he gets a glimpse of beaver, before joining a group of steam enthusiasts restoring an old puffer on the Crinan Canal. Stone Age rock art leads him north to Loch Awe, where he drives a herd of Highland cows towards his final destination – the mountainous heights of Ben Cruachan.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The Porthcawl crew have just seconds to spare when two teenagers on holiday get caught on a rocky outcrop by a large swell and a rising spring tide.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 12th September 2018)

In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team attempt their biggest and longest build yet – constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community. The team attempt to build a two-storey flexible-use centre that can be used by the community however it decides. Research indicated that there wasn’t enough low-cost space that different community groups could use in the area, so with the help of generous construction companies, suppliers and volunteers, the DIY SOS team attempt to do what they can to help. The team are joined by the Duke of Cambridge, who meets local residents and talks to firefighters who were among the first responders on the night of the fire. Along the way, Nick meets different groups who could benefit from the building of a new community space.

Their journey takes in enchanted forests and fairy-tale castles; mountains and valleys; the baffling French lock system; local wines; and a visit to Strasbourg and the European Parliament.

Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 6th November 2017)

Travelogue in which Chris Tarrant rides some of the world’s wildest trains. Chris traverses Morocco from west to east before heading off into the sands of the Sahara to discover whether a legendary line that stretches all the way to Timbuktu really exists.

DIY SOS is back on veteran street in Manchester to build the final home on the road for a decorated former soldier and his young family. Two years ago, with the help of Prince William and Prince Harry, DIY SOS launched their most ambitious project yet – transforming a derelict street into a vibrant community for veterans and local people, creating new homes and a veterans’ support centre. Now, with the project almost complete, Nick Knowles and the team return to build the last remaining home for amputee and single dad Simon Flores, whose foot was blown off by a roadside bomb during a patrol in Iraq.

A year ago, Donald Trump was elected President of the United States; and in that time barely a day has passed without him hitting the headlines. Scotland had an early glimpse of the man and his methods. For more than a decade, he’s attracted both praise and criticism over his development of a golf course in Aberdeenshire. A development he said was inspired by his mother coming from Stornoway. This programme examines his relationship with Scotland, and looks at the current condition and future plans for the Trump businesses here.

Documentary series. Rob Bell explores the history and construction of iconic bridges. A symbol of the Industrial Revolution, the elegant Iron Bridge over the river Severn in rural Shropshire was the world’s first bridge to be constructed entirely from iron. Rob reveals the difficulties encountered in building it, the scepticism of contemporary engineers, how it inspired Thomas Telford to design the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the bridge’s role as a catalyst for the birth of a civil engineering.

Dr Logan attempts to discover how best to cope with it and whether some people might have their own natural midge repellent.

James May, Kate Humble and Ant Anstead go live behind the scenes at the MINI Plant in Oxford to bring us the modern miracle of car production in real time. Over two nights they will reveal the science, engineering and people that keep us all on the road, and see a car built from start to finish in a little over 24 hours. In the first episode, James makes friends with an army of diligent robots and busts the myth that British manufacturing is dead. Kate heads to Norway to discover why the electric car is king of the Norwegian road and Ant explores the history and heritage of one of the most iconic cars ever built. To earn their place in the grand final, the four groups left standing must rise to a unique challenge – combine vocals, choreography and a killer concept to create a video with the potential to become an internet hit. Before the cameras even roll, one group has to contend with losing their leader, while a bizarre take on rapping threatens to derail another. Once in the can, the videos will be screened to a live audience and a jury of a cappella experts. Their votes will decide who goes through to the final and which group will leave the contest for good.

Building Cars Live (BBC 2/HD | 7:30pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 21st October 2015)

James May, Kate Humble and Ant Anstead go live behind the scenes at the MINI Plant in Oxford to bring us the modern miracle of car production in real time. Over two nights they will reveal the science, engineering and people that keep us all on the road, and see a car built from start to finish in a little over 24 hours. James races against the clock on the production line and embraces the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. Kate gets to the bottom of how manufacturers test car seats for mass production and Ant heads to Germany to put his faith in a driverless car on the autobahn. Inside the factory, the team reveal what it takes to build a thousand different cars a day, and are live as a car that started being built yesterday drives off the production line for the very first time.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 21st October 2015)

In the second episode of a two-part special, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team continue with their most ambitious build ever – an attempt to regenerate a rundown community in Manchester. The team are aiming to transform an entire street, turning empty properties into homes for war veterans and building a support centre to help other veterans find homes and jobs. The plan is to redo the fronts of all the houses and put in new utilities – but with late nights and delays, it is looking like the team might not meet their deadlines.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 21st October 2015)

So what kind of house should you build when you move to a new place, that’s traditional and architecturally conservative? Surely something that fits in, that’s similar to the houses of the new neighbours you want to impress? Not if you’re Stephen Yeoman and Anita Findlay. They want to put up a cutting edge, post-industrial house that’s covered in bright orange rusty metal. Not only that, their plot is one of the most prominent in their new home town in the South Downs – so everyone will be watching. Having to deal with an incredibly tight riverside plot, cash flow problems that threaten to bring work to a halt, and news of a first child on the way, Stephen and Anita’s project proves a real roller coaster ride. And that’s all before the fitting of their controversial rusty steel cladding starts to go badly wrong.

George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 22nd October 2015)

George meets a young couple desperate to get onto the housing ladder who’ve come up with a radical plan – to build a home made almost entirely from scrap with a budget of zero pounds. There’s also a woman putting together a garden retreat out of reclaimed copper. The problem is she has no design experience, no building experience, and suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. In George’s road trip across Germany, he visits a high design houseboat, and is even allowed to take it out for a spin. And, as George and Will’s floating beach hut nears completion, there’s drama in the workshop.

Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railway Journeys (Channel 5 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 22nd October 2015)

Documentary series in which Chris Tarrant explores the world’s most extreme railway lines. Chris attempts to cross the length of Cuba, the only island in the Caribbean to boast an extensive railway network, from Havana in the west to the far east of the island. Given old and battered trains that often fail to run, this proves rather more of a challenge than he had anticipated.

TFI Friday (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 23rd October 2015)

Following the triumphant return of TFI Friday earlier this year, Chris Evans’ seminal cult entertainment show is back with a new series. Broadcasting from a new home in central London, there are brand new features and raucous stunts. Tonight’s guests include Justin Bieber, Dawn French, Macklemore and Lewis, Nicholas Hoult and Hurts. TFI is once again set to be a key part of the Friday night schedule.

Paul Murton visits the islands lying off the Scottish coast. In this final edition, Paul heads to the islands of Fetlar, Unst and Yell, which lie on Scotland’s northern frontier and are as much Scandinavian as Scottish – and were, in fact, once part of Norway. Along the way he sings with the Shanty Yell Men who came together to celebrate their Norse heritage, learns how to ‘roo’ Shetland sheep the traditional way, and gets an incredible opportunity to see the wild otters who make their home here in Shetland’s pristine waters. And finally, Paul fulfils a long-held ambition to visit Out Stack, the rocky outcrop that is famous for being the ‘full stop’ at the edge of Britain.

The Naked Choir with Gareth Malone (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 13th October 2015)

Gareth Malone presents the search for the nation’s best amateur a cappella group. Gareth concludes his intensive training with more expert help and a new focus on performance technique. As the choirs strive to master choreography and stagecraft, one group aims to bring Big Top fun to their performance, while another struggles with sex appeal. Their training over, all five groups will compete once more, performing in front of a live audience and a jury of a cappella experts – their votes will decide who makes it through to the semi-final and which group will leave the contest for good.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 14th October 2015)

Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team are back for a two-part special with their most ambitious build ever, and this time they are joined by two special royal helpers. The team are taking on a whole street in Manchester and turning run-down empty properties into homes for veterans. The team rally the local community to get stuck in and are also helped by Prince William and Prince Harry, who volunteer on site. In this show, the trades come together to build homes for two former soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), before also helping them to find new careers in the building trade. But with numbers of volunteers lower than what’s needed and the buildings proving trickier than anticipated, it’s turning into the toughest build yet.

Restoring Britain’s Landmarks (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 14th October 2015)

This brand new series goes behind the scenes at conservation charity The Landmark Trust, following amazing restorations and delving into the history surrounding some of Britain’s most remarkable buildings. In the first episode, work starts on the demolition and assessment at Georgian villa Belmont House in Lyme Regis. John Evetts, Head of Furnishings, goes to war with the décor at Hougoumont Farm, a building on the Waterloo battlefield. Alastair Dick-Cleland visits the Music Room in Lancaster to check in on a gilt-edged overhaul to the ornate bedroom plasterwork. And, back in Lyme Regis, Director of The Landmark Trust, historian Dr Anna Keay, explains the unusual reason why Belmont House is a ‘must-save’ building for the Trust, and investigates the mysterious builder of the house: Eleanor Coade.

Can you really convert a cowshed into a home by learning everything from the internet? Private chef Ed Versluys and pilates instructor Vicky Anderson do not do things by halves. Within two years of meeting they got engaged, sold up and abandoned their city lives, and bought an ugly, derelict 1940s concrete cowshed with amazing views over the Somerset countryside. They’re project managing and converting the cowshed themselves with the help of just one young builder and what they can learn online. They’ve given themselves only eight months and just over £200k to make a warm, comfortable three bedroom home with straw bale walls and wide expanses of glass. It’s an almighty challenge.

George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 15th October 2015)

George meets a couple wanting to transform two dilapidated air raid shelters in their garden. But they can’t agree on who gets which one and George soon finds himself in the middle of a ‘he shed’, ‘she shed’ argument. George meets Guinnie – at 12 years old, the youngest ever designer featured on Amazing Spaces. Along with her builder Dad, she’s taking her school project, to design the ultimate party shed, off the homework page and into her back garden. As Will Hardie continues work on the floating beach hut, on the tightest of budgets, he visits a million pound beach house, to see just what’s possible if money is no object. And George’s trip across Germany continues as he explores an old East German water tower that’s been transformed into a luxury home with an incredible 360 degree view.
