Writer and historian Dan Jones navigates Britain’s longest canal to be built by just one company, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Built to link the economically booming counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire, this 19th-century superhighway was experimental for the time, and made Liverpool the busiest port in the world. In Burnley, the cotton capital of the 19th century, Dan visits the world’s only steam-powered cotton mill, where enough cloth was woven each year to reach to the moon and back two-and-a-half times.

In this episode, a family restores one of only two surviving coaches used by Queen Victoria. The carriage has been rotting in a car park for decades. But now owner Stephen Middleton is putting his heart and soul into a restoration fit for a queen. Helped by his wife Ying, and teenage daughter Honey, Stephen uncovers a hidden gold step and an early gas light in the roof. Peter keeps a particular beady eye on the work, telling Stephen, ‘Queen Victoria will be turning in her grave if you don’t get this right.’ And Henry Cole investigates how engineers met Queen Victoria’s demands for a smooth ride.

The show that looks at life in the national parks of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales returns for a new series. In the Lakes, champion sheep breeder Arnold Lancaster prepares his flock for the famous Westmorland County Show. In the Dales, the church bells at St Bartholomew’s remain silent after their belfry has fallen into disrepair. Locals arrange a fund raiser to get the bells ringing again. And dog trainer John Halstad prepares his dog Wren for a Dales trial.

Luxury and glamour are at the heart of this episode, as the series jumps forward 100 years to 1960. The restoration project this time is a rusting and tired Pullman dining car, one of the very last batch to be made in Britain. The dedicated restoration team at Tyseley Engineering Works in Birmingham must transform both the dining car while getting the wreck of a kitchen back to working order. There’s heavy engineering to do, as well as meticulous attention to detail needed. Peter’s third driving lesson sees him grappling with reading signals, while still keeping the fire burning and the steam at the correct pressure. Henry Cole delves into the history of catering on the railways.

The Space Shuttle: Triumph and Tragedy (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 11th June 2018)

Following the Challenger disaster, the Shuttle was saved by the fall of the Soviet Union, as America worried that Russian scientists would defect to rogue states and advance their own space projects. President Clinton was then persuaded to use the Shuttles to supply Russia’s Mir space station. This cooperation eventually led to the creation of the International Space Station.

This holiday-themed episode visits the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, as an enchanting wooden carriage from the very dawn of the railway age – 1864 – is restored. In its heyday, the carriage transported Victorian holidaymakers to the posh seaside resorts on the Isle of Wight, but it was scrapped in 1920 and converted into a holiday chalet. The team prepare to convert it back into a carriage featuring two second class compartments and a first class salon, with rich blue velvet handmade upholstery and carefully crafted period features. Peter Snow goes for his second driving lesson. And Henry Cole explores how the railways were responsible for bringing seaside holidays to the masses.
