Crossrail: Where Did It All Go Wrong? (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 3rd August 2019)

Crossrail is Europe’s biggest engineering project, a new train line linking east and west London that was meant to open in December last year, but it is years behind schedule, billions over budget and dogged by all kinds of problems. This documentary tracks the troubled project from the very beginning, featuring interviews with former workers, politicians and transport experts, as well as people who were promised that Crossrail would bring huge benefits.

Brighton: 50 Years of Gay (BBC 4/HD | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 4th August 2019)

Simon Fanshawe marks the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which which decriminalised private homosexual acts between men aged over 21. The writer and broadcaster examines this landmark change in the law and reveals the story of the fight for gay equality through the colourful history of his home town of Brighton.

Portillo: The Trouble with the Tories (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:15pm | Thursday 8th August 2019)

Part two of two. The former cabinet minister’s assessment of the Conservative Party concentrates on Brexit, and how the party has brought itself to the brink of political destruction over arguably the biggest political crisis in Britain since the Second World War. With contributions from Boris Johnson, William Hague, Michael Gove, Michael Heseltine, Norman Lamont and Tony Blair, Portillo considers how splits in the party over widened since the referendum, and how Parliament struggled to deliver on the British people’s vote to leave the EU.

Celebrity 5 Go Barging (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:20pm | Friday 9th August 2019)

In Warwickshire, Michael Buerk, Shaun Williamson, Amanda Barrie, Anita Harris and John Prescott settle into new boats, then head out to conquer the Grand Union Canal. First, however, there is the small question of the 21-lock flight at Hatton as the five meet some of the volunteers who restore the locks and keep then functioning. Amanda takes a detour to Warwick Castle in search of her ancestors, while Sean and John, discover the unique joys of sheep-racing. Deep into Shakespeare country, Michael tries to find the famous local pies he remembers from his youth.
