Great Coastal Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Monday 29th April 2024)

Canvey Island to Wrabness. Series 3, episode 16. Michael Portillo embarks on a trip along the coast of the east of England, beginning in the Thames estuary, where creeks separate Canvey Island from the mainland and generations of peopel have struggled to stay on dry land. Michael meets an islander to hear how Dutch engineers were drafted in to reclaim and defend the island from the sea.

Woodbridge to Southwold. Series 3. Series 3. Michael Portillo reaches the Deben estuary on his railway journey around eastern England. At Woodbridge, he is plunged into a rafting challenge with the sea scouts, who are a part of a movement that is nearly as old as them. In Southwold, Michael visits the Adnams brewery and learns about the town’s history of ale production.

Lowestoft to Great Yarmouth. Series 3, episode 18. Michael Portillo’s journey takes him to the waters off the Norfolk coast, where he meets a diving duo who are searching for the wreckage of a sunken ship, which carried a future king. In Lowestoft, Michael discovers how aspiring wooden boat builders are drawn here from across the world to learn traditional skills, and in Great Yarmouth he visits the Burgh Castle Roman Fort.

Race Across the World (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 1st May 2024) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

The teams leave Cambodia at the end of the national holiday Pchum Ben and travel 1,400km through Thailand to the mountain town of Mae Sariang in the Shan Highlands on the Thai-Myanmar border.

West Runton to Burnham Market. Series 3, episode 19. Michael Portillo explores West Runton in Norfolk, samples the local crab at Sheringham, and from Weybourne, he heads to Cley next the Sea, where he visits one of the country’s oldest nature reserves. Later, in the village of Burnham Market, Michael joins a Norfolk-born chef at his fish and seafood restaurant.

Wells-next-the-Sea to The Wash. Series 3, episode 20. As Michael Portillo’s exploration of the eastern reaches of England draws to a close, he samples the smallest public railway in the world, the Wells and Walsingham line. His journey ends at the bay between Norfolk and Lincolnshire, known as The Wash.

Britain by Steam (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 3rd May 2024) ** NEW SERIES **

Lake District. Series 2, episode 1. Journalist and presenter John Sergeant, actor Peter Davison and steam aficionado Paul Piglet Middleton are back, and this time they’re exploring some of the most beautiful parts of Britain by steam. in this episode they explore the beautiful Lake District via a narrow-gauge steam train, a gigantic traction engine, a 1906 steam launch, and a bone-shatteringly uncomfortable miniature Foden steam van.
