Middlesbrough to Boulby. Series 2, episode 6. Michael Portillo joins the hunt for dark matter in the deepest mine in Britain in Boulby, North Yorkshire, then visits Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge, which offers high views over the Tees estuary and the Cleveland Hills. At Saltholme, Michael joins the RSPB in a hide to observe a visiting bird of prey.

Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay. Series 2, episode 7. Michael Portillo travels from Whitby, where he explores the port’s shipbuilding and seafaring heritage, to Robin Hood’s Bay, a former smuggling haven.

Scarborough to Bridlington. Series 2, episode 8. Michael Portillo is in the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough to explore one of the greatest royal fortresses in England.

Hornsea to Spurn Point. Series 2, episode 9. Michael Portillo continues his journey in the East Yorkshire resort of Hornsea, famous for its distinctive pottery. In Hull, he discovers how one of Hull FC’s star players made history as Britain’s first black rugby captain. From Hull, Michael hitches a ride on a fine-looking barge heading to Goole on a network of canals. At Spurn Point, Michael hears how along this coast an ingenious 19th-century RNLI invention saved many lives.

Grimsby to Humberston Fitties. Series 2, episode 10. Michael Portillo has reached Lincolnshire, where his coastal railway journey from Middlesbrough ends. In Grimsby Town, he investigates a new stage in the town’s history – as a maintenance base for some of the largest wind farms in the world. In neighbouring Cleethorpes, Michael rides on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, pulled by a miniature steam locomotive. Later, Michael makes for a curious and wild stretch of coastline at Humberston.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 2nd June 2023)

Isle of Man. Series 5, episode 4. The comedian explores the Isle of Man, and discovers an island of beautiful landscapes, friendly people and exciting discoveries. Susan kicks off her latest adventure exploring the historic port of Peel. In this former Viking stronghold, she meets a prolific treasure hunter before joining the crew of a Viking longboat for a trip around the harbour.
